Showdown at Beowawe (Chapter 3) -- Storming the Gates
Beowawe was in an uproar.

Moments before an unlikely band of heroes would arrive, an ear-splitting alarm erupted through the encampment. At each tower, stationed guards swept searchlights across the dusty ground. They threw shadow into unforgiving light, bright as day.

Guards swarmed on the place where prisoners slept and fretted, and locked the bunkroom down tight. No one out, and no would-be defiants in. One by one, the doors of portable bathrooms were kicked in, only to be disregarded seconds later as they were discovered empty. Rough-planked tables were overturned in the mess hall.

Somewhere, brunette and blonde amateur rebels hunkered down with guns. Badly outnumbered. Captives in isolation -- ensouled vampire, half-demoness, and indomitable human -- were left to wonder over the chaos they heard but couldn't see.

The attention of the Scourge had been garnered. And it unwittingly pulled focus away from a threat that loomed outside of Beowawe's walls.

When Johnny comes marching home again, hurrah... Hurrah...

Katherine's mental tune was whistled calmly over the intercom, soon telling Deanna to, "Stop here." The tank slowing smoothly down to a halt, as the other vampiress did so on cue.

The M1 tank was a remarkable piece of hardware. A bit noisy and able to guzzle fuel like a thing possessed, but with few opponents in the world which could face it down.

Which meant their target was going to be easy prey.

Having to load in the shell herself, they were still a fair distance out. Certainly way beyond the point where the camp's defences would be able to pick them out. Of course, the advantage night vision gear tended to help her, too...

Taking careful aim was like doing so with a camera. A multi-million dollar, gyo-stabliised, laser-designating camera. With teeth.

"We got... Towers... A wall... Bingo. Primary target. Looks like we'll have to get through before getting a good shot at it, though. Here goes nothin'..."

THOOOM

The tank shell hit the compound's wall by around the time Deana was told to get moving again - that time at top speed. Katherine reloading another, but saving it for a very special purpose. Now, hundreds of coaxal machine gun bullets were spraying out. The proverbial cavalry charging forth and eating up the distance at full throttle, while Katherine hosed down the guard towers with more accuracy than they were apparently prepared for.

And when they rammed through those weakened walls, turning the impact point into rubble, it was time to party. The most obvious defences were down, but that wasn't going to change the fact that there were dozens, possibly hundreds of very angry demons inside, all wanting to rip their heads off.

"Make for the centre!" Deanna was ordered over headset. Katherine wanting the hulking vehicle to divert enough attention for the others behind to drive through the same hole, more or less unnoticed. "Everybody else, get on out and take 'em down!"

Because as soon as someone opened up the hatch, they were going to find that the place was crawling.

Deanna popped the hatch and ventured a quick look outside.

"Fuck, there's a lot of them," she commented into the headset. "And they all have automatic machine guns!"

She took quick note of the nearest building, some place she could find shelter before engaging the enemy with her sword. A bullet whizzed by Deanna's head, missing her by less than an inch.

"Better lay down some cover fire before people jump out, Kat. I'm not in the mood to be shish-kabobed," she yelled as she ducked back inside the safer confines of the metallic construct.

"Yeah, I'm on it," the vampiress of darker hair spoke, with significantly more casual attitude than one might have expected, given the circumstances. "I'll give 'em the Private Ryan treatment..."

Turning 360 degrees, the turret rotated in a withering blast of machine gun fire, forcing those around it to duck down and, at the very least, not approach much further. Katherine's next course of action to line the viewfinder up with the one thing there they had come to destroy.

It had taken a lot of lives and time to construct that device. A monumental testament to the efforts of slave labour and demonic vision.

And Katherine ended it all in one fatal press of a button.

"Boom!" She celebrated, watching the creatures' dream go up in an explosive cloud of metal and glass. Fire and shrapnel raining down around them; one last thing to keep the beasts away for a few more vital seconds.

Tearing off her own headset without care, Katherine opened the hatch atop turret with a resounding CLANG of metal. Standing with enough room behind her for the three others to pile out. The vampiress taking hold of the 50 calibre, just as Mallory once had.

"Hi, kids!" She greeted the confused demons. A forced smile quickly evaporating to something far more dangerous. "I'm back for what's mine..."

Then she let rip with a hail of bullets, covering their proverbial D-Day beach landing.

Whistler stopped the engine several meters from the opening of the encampment. Flames licked the night sky with the opening salvo from the tank. As the shot 'heard 'round the world' ignited the war at Beowawe, Whistler took a sharp breath and pulled his weapon from the jacket pocket.

Safety still on. For now.

He nodded to Mallory. "Showtime, huh?"

Whistler slid out of the car, checked that his spine was intact. He couldn't turn his back on the people inside.

Or the woman in the trunk.

"You go on ahead, Mall, I'm gonna grab some ammunition outta the back and I'll meet you in hell."

As chaos erupted with the tank's arrival, Quinn slammed open the door of Whistler's car and immediately sought cover. Showtime, indeed. She'd had the brains to bring along extra ammo, but hopefully she wouldn't be facing too many of these things on her own. Dealing with them from the safety of an armored vehicle was one thing, on foot with just a shotgun and pistol for protection was quite another.

"Keep your head low and don't let your ass drag the ground," she muttered, speaking to herself just as much as she was to the man who'd so kindly given her a lift to this battle. Through the smoke and the ash of the destroyed lab, she could see the isolation boxes Kael had mentioned, and beyond that the sleeping quarters. Hayden and Matthew seemed to be opening those up in search of prisoners, so the redhead squared her shoulders and made her way towards the bunkhouses instead. Whatever Whistler was getting from the trunk, he'd be along soon enough.

There was yet another explosion somewhere ahead of her, but she was doing her best to block out everything but her task. No heroics, no facing these things head-on, just free as many people as she could without getting caught. Defend herself if she had to. That was all. She could do this.

She skirted the thick of the fighting, ended up hunkered down behind the sleeping quarters. Fuck, they were everywhere. Five of them raced past, their machine guns catching the moonlight, missing her hiding place by inches. Hive mind, she thought, watching them move nearly as one.

She hoped the distraction would be sufficient. Because Whistler's apparently offhand comment had been right; this was hell.

A veritable shower of crude pots and pans rained down and rattled across the floor, as a canonic explosion rocked the encampment.

Hannah curled thin arms around her head and tucked even further into the corner. Victoria was at her side, both of them having scurried into the mess hall when the searchlights went up. They were backed into the kitchen while demons overturned tables in a dogged search for the gunwomen. From that corner, they would've made some kind of stand.

But now, the sound of splintering wood was overcome by shattered rock and a throaty rumbling of engine.

Hannah tentatively lifted her head, and flinched away again as the blast was answered by gunfire.

"What was that?!" she whispered frantically, and gripped the rifle to her chest.

With their hunters suddenly heading for elsewhere, Victoria chanced a peak out of one of the windows, as a hybrid sound of truck and airliner made its rumbling presence felt and the vampiress found herself aghast with amazement. There had been the sounds of gunfire, eliminating the towers, unbeknownst to them, but now...

Now it all became clear.

"You know a couple of weeks ago, when you said you wished the cavalry would arrive? Well, I think they have! In a tank! And by the looks of it, they're gonna' be swamped by 'Albert's' friends!"

Oh, bollocks.

Spike had been sleeping, and well, at that. For the first time since being thrown in this dump of a cell, te vampire had managed a decent sleep, several hours' worth that had left him rested and feeling energized.

Still not 100 percent, but it was better than it had been a week earlier.

The vampire sat up from his dirtied bunk, glaring at the door to his cell with an angry glare. The commotion outside was annoying at best, but Spike had managed to somewhat drown that out.

The sudden pounding on his door, however, needed to be dealt with.

"Piss off!" he bit angrily at the door. "Already drank your sodding blood!"

Bethany turned her head as she felt heat and she was momentarily pulled from her fight to take in Katherine's predicament. She saw that her other companions were too busy and she doubted that they'd care enough.

A heel of a palm connected with a Scourge's face to knock it off its feet and onto its back. She literally used it as viable walking ground and moved quickly through the crowd.

Before long, she was at the pump and she noted that there was now water in the bucket. "Desperate times.." She muttered as she attacked the metal of the pipe itself. Blades brought about holes and a sudden rush of water suddenly came gushing out and started to spray around the surrounding area.

Hayden's fist paused mid-knock, and he adopted an incredulous look.

"... What?!"

In the midst of a full-scale attack on Beowawe -- tank fire, gun fire, grenade fire included -- someone didn't have a goddamn clue what was going on around him.

And that someone was apparently a British vampire.

Hayden shook his head, unsheathed his sword with a grimace of discomfort, and started hacking at the latch as best he could with limited help from his left arm. Over and over and over he struck it, the sound no doubt ear-splitting inside the box.

When the latch broke partially loose, the Watcher abandoned the sword and kicked with boot sole instead. It popped loose without warning and swung inward.

"Sorry," he growled between heaved breaths, and glared at the familiar face inside. "I didn't bring dinner."

He'd hovered in the shadows, outside of the main skirmish. Watched Slayers and demons alike attack one another with a fervor that sent a slight shudder down his spine. Kept out of the way of the more capable rescuers. Not that Whistler wasn't capable of getting the job done. He had that uncanny knack of showing up when needed, lend a helping hand and, most importantly, getting the fuck out with minor scrapes and bruises.

Of course that's when he'd worked for the Powers That Be. When it gave him a sense of invulnerability. No one shot the messenger.

Well, they did. He'd just managed to not be where the bullets were flying.

So much for that.

He spied two denizens of Beowawe huddled behind the wreckage of a former guard tower. Just beyond, Hayden and Matthew were shepherding the others to waiting trucks. But these two got lost in the shuffle, and if he didn't step in, chances are they'd become casualties of the war he'd helped bring to this place.

Ducking low, Whistler sprinted to their side. "Remember me?" he offered, hoping for some recognition. Every moment counted. "The bus is leavin' and you're supposed to be on it. Follow me."

The youngest, a girl maybe seventeen, nodded, afraid to speak. She hugged her erstwhile companion's arm tightly. They both looked to him with a small sense of relief, before eyes widened in abject terror.

Whistler followed their gaze to a Scourge limping towards them.

Survival instinct was a powerful thing. And when that seemed a lost cause, the reliance on ingrained training could be just as compelling. A soldier limping on a shattered femur, whose fingers did their level best to plug the holes riddling his body, could stagger on toward his mission.

Such was the case with the Scourge en route to the destroyed watchtower. Each step of the way, blood like ink dripped down his trousers, and ran from a number of tears in his high-collared uniform.

He was to take position on the wall, and snipe those who ran for the open gate. The rifle at his side stood testament to that goal. Whether it was still loaded or not was a mystery. So was the likelihood of him eliminating a target. A wealth of goop dripped from forehead wound into the demon's sunken eyes.

An unconvincing growl emanated from the back of his throat. He'd caught sight of the frightened prisoners, and the man who wore the hat. On he limped, but didn't make a move for his gun.

Sun Tzu was a brilliant tactician. And one of the most underrated demons to walk the earth.

The Art of War defined defined thirteen key points for battle.

Hannibal had the fourteenth. Scorched earth.

As the battle trickled down to the last of his soldiers, he refused to admit defeat. If he couldn't reclaim this mudball for its true masters, he'd ensure this pathetic group of fighters didn't enjoy another sunrise.

He quietly slipped out the now-obliterated north gates and headed west 200 meters. He located and removed the camoflauge tarpaulin, revealing an Army surplus truck. The mobile device sat stoically against the night sky, metal reflective against the stars.

Hannibal unlocked the hatch. Powering up the device was simple enough. A few switches and five minutes later, Beowawe would be nothing but dust, wood and metal.

The atmosphere of battle had changed. An intangible knowledge was held by all, that the tide had turned against apocalyptic demons in favor of the world’s protectors. That didn’t mean that skirmishes subsided. Those who had laid waste to Beowawe were too charged with the adrenaline of war to stop until victory was assured. The Scourge were too prideful to hand over their vision of a reborn Earth until there was no fight left in them.

The leader of pureblood demons turned his back on subordinates to honor a greater mission. Outside, the true device waited to fulfill its promise, and he would have that satisfaction when they burned.

Someone was on his heels. Rhiannon had wandered the interior of the camp in vain, desperate to catch a glimpse of Joseph, and was pulled away by the sight of Hannibal, walking assuredly through the walls with all the arrogant posturing of someone who knew better.

If she couldn’t find Joseph, then the only thing to be done was her part. Maybe she could take a little of what she’d contributed back.

To do it, she had to pass through the only opening in the gate. Hannibal had gotten through undetected. It was a privilege granted by chaos; the white hats were scrambling to make sure that no prisoner got left behind.

She put her back against the battered wall. Watched in silence as Devon, Quinn, and Hayden passed inside, and slipped out in their wake.

It was easy to arrive undetected at the Army truck. The noise of Beowawe was only 200 meters behind, and her long strides were muffled by the rustle of tarp folded back. The closer she got, the darker her expression became. Hannibal had pulled a shell trick on them all.

Rhiannon pulled the knife off her leg, flipped the hilt in her palm, and sank it into the back of Hannibal’s neck.

Freedom.

Or something very close to it, anyway. Spike made a mental note to later thank the man who'd come to bust him out of his cell, even if the vampire had given him a less-than-curteous welcome. Spike now made his way carefully through the facility, still shirtless, a packet of the blood those demons were feeding him tucked away in the back pocket of his jeans.

Spike peered over the corner of one wall, looking for any demons to avoid and/or kill. His hair was long and sticking out everywhere, his frame a decent bit smaller than it had been before his capture. But thanks to forcing himself to eat the slop they'd been feeding him, Spike had a decent bit of strength at his disposal.

He wasn't nearly himself, but at this point, William the Bloody was so pissed it didn't matter.

Clenching his fists tightly, Spike felt his face change, controting into the demonic visage of the vampire, ruged creases forming over his brow and fangs portruding from gums. Walking out from behind the wall, Spike ignored all threats to hi, snarling and bellowing, "Someone has my coat...c'mon, mate. Let's have a go, shall we?"

No sooner had Spike said those words, he saw a demon strolling toward him, cloaked by an all-too-familiar layer of black leather. The coat swayed as the demon walked, the sinews strewn across the creature's face making the vampire cringe.

Fists tightened even more, fingernails nearly drawing blood from Spike's skin. He grinned to himself, fangs glistening under the dim lights of the hallway.

This was gonna be fun...

"What's wrong, mate?" Spike said as he approached the demon. "Couldn't afford one of your own?"

The demon simply grinned, his teeth rotted and jagged. His breath reeked of death, more so than Spike's natural odor. The creature was surprisingly unarmed, given the explosions and other manner or war-like noises coming from the complex surrounding them. Without so much as a word, the demon charged Spike, catching him off-guard with its quickness as it drug the vampire to the ground, straddling and punching him in the face.

The vampire hit the dirt beneath him with a grunt, raising his arms to block as many of the demon's blows as possible. Each punch pounded into his already-bruised flesh, and Spike could feel blood vessels bursting in his body, which would result in more bruises.

And Spike had enough.

With a mighty growl, the vampire pushed the demon off him before getting back to his feet, grabbing the demon by the coat and ramming it face-first into a nearby wall.

The sound of the creature's screams of pain brought a satisfied smile to Spike's demonic face, but not nearly as much as the idea that popped into his head. Turning the demon around to face him, Spike reached into his back pocket for the bag of blood he'd saved for just such an occasion.

Waving the bag in the demon's face, Spike growled, "What's on the menu tonight? Motor oil or rotten eggs and milk?"

"Neither," the demon hissed defiantely. "Otter blood mixed with bile and mucous from a fungus demon. Quite disgusting, actually."

If possible, Spike's grin grew. "Good," he said before ripping the bag open with his teeth and shoving its contents into the demon's mouth. The demon gurgled and struggled as Spike squeezed the bag, forcing the blood deeper, all the way down the creature's throat.

The demon had no choice but to swallow whatever blood didn't wind up on its or Spike's face. Once the bag was empty, Spike threw both bag and demon to the ground, relishing in the sight and sound of the demon hunched over, throwing up. Each convulsion, each pained hack...each splash of demon vomit on the dirt...was music to Spike's eyes and ears.

Still hunched over, body racked by convulsions, the demon cursed Spike, slowly getting back to its feet. "I'll have your skull for that..."

"What?" Spike asked in mock surprise. "You didn't like it. My apologies."

Grabbing the demon by the coat again, Spike kneed the creature in the groin, resulting in a high-pitched yelp. So these demos had similar biological makeups to humans...that was good to know.

The knee was followed by a right fist to the demon's nose, the crack of bone resonating within the walls. One punch followed another until Spike's fist was coated in blood and tiny bits of sinewy flesh. He basked in the sight of the demon struggling to fight back, loving how its face looked caked in blood.

Not only was the whole blood-drinking and vomiting episode really funny, but it also weakened the demon considerably.

As the demon stumbled and tried to stay on his feet, Spike approached again, grabbing the back of the demon's head and jabbing his thumb into the creature's eye. The demon's blood-curtling scream was matched by one of pure fury on the vampire's part. Spike might not have been at his strongest at the moment, but the anger was fueling this entire barrage.

Once Spike felt the demon's eyeball give way and break in two, he took back his thumb, tossing the demon to the ground, laughing to himself as the demon landed face-first in its own vomit.

Kneeling over the demon, Spike grabbed it and turned it onto its back. Now straddling the demon, Spike again unleashed a barrage of punches, pounding the already-putred face before him into an even bigger pulp. Somewhere between the flesh on flesh and blood splattering onto the vampire's arms, Spike swore he heard the demon begging for mercy.

"What?" the vampire smirked, grabbing the demon's head again. "The cause not what you thought it was?"

The demon coughed and hacked a couple times, bile and drool running down its chin as it stifled a weak laugh, shaking it head. "The...the...cause will remain...kill me if...if you want, but...but we will not...be...be stopped..."

"Right," Spike said sarcastically, resting his left hand on the demon's cheek and his right hand on the back of its head. With one last grunt, Spike twisted his arms, the resounding crack of the demon's neck filling the hallway.

For moments, Spike stayed in his crouched position, catching his breath from the fight. He stared at the carcass under him, chuckling to himself.

Spike was always up for a good brawl, but this one was especially entertaining.

Then, much like he'd done to a Slayer over 40 years earlier, Spike got up, removing the coat from the dead demon. One arm, then the other, and within moments, the vampire was once again coated in familiar black leather.

Linus had his blanket. Spike had his coat.

Spike surfed through the pockets of his jacket before smiling, having found his cigarette and Zippo. He lit one, glancing over his shoulder as he closed his lighter and shoved it back in his pocket. The vampire shook his head with a light smirk, and the urge to kick the body as he walked by was too much for him to resist.

"Well," Spike uttered with lit cigarette clutched between his teeth, "that was fun."

Whistler barrelled towards the various trucks and cars, frantically waving his arms. Most of the surviving prisoners had been loaded into the larger vehicles absconded from the Scourge, and the others were animatedly discussing how to explain the throng of wounded to hospital staff and the resulting official inquests.

"Stop!" he exclaimed. Whistler made it to the closest car and stopped, doubling over to catch his breath. "We've got a huge snafu."

The others turned to face him, puzzled by his frantic expressions.

"The device," he stammered. "Wasn't inside. They'd hidden it just over 400 meters west o' here."

"It's fuckin' armed. We have maybe four minutes tops before we're all grilled cheese on the desert."
