[Seeking A Watcher -- Kris/Corbett Interaction]
Kris had returned home, cleaned up and tried to sleep. Sleep hadn’t come to her so she had paced the apartment and when that hadn’t tired her out to the point of passing out, she had slipped on her boots and slid her jacket on over her shoulders.

She had so much going on in her head and so many things that had gone unsaid that she just need to stretch her legs and get rid of all that nervous energy. Her legs carried her through Searchlight and back to the apartment which housed the two Watchers she was close to.

Kris tried knocking but no-one answered so she stepped back and settled herself down against the pavement to wait. She drew her legs up and settled her arms across the top of he knees. She sighed as she leaned down and settled her chin against her arms.

She ached from head to toe and yet her physical pain could no way compare with the turmoil taking place beneath the surface. Rhiannon worried her and she didn’t know if there was anything she could do to help her and her father weighed heavy on her mind.

Kris closed her eyes and took to resting her forehead against her arms. She focused on calming her breathing and trying to clear a very loud and generally confusing head, one thing at a time or she was liable to go insane.

She just hoped that Corbett would be home soon.

The day hadn't been much fun for Corbett.

Then again, a day that started off with a pounding headache and a 20-minute ritual sacrifice to the porcelain gods wasn't likely to be on anyone's Top Ten list. For all his years, for all the times the Watcher had let himself go before, he had to face facts:

He didn't hold vodka nearly as well as he used to.

Aside from that, his run-in with Faith the night before had proven beneficial. After all, if a Slayer who once killed people--and enjoyed it--could forgive herself and a find a way to live her life, then Corbett could do the same.

After all, he wasn't the one who killed Teresa.

He was, however, the Watcher who'd essentially ignored his Slayer the past couple weeks, so busy with his books and research into the past that he'd lost sight of his present. Kris was his second chance, and Corbett hadn't been making very good use of it.

As the car pulled into its parking spot, Corbett considered bringing the books he'd just bought from Unseen Insight with him. But when he saw Kris sitting in front of his apartment, head rested on her arms, he decided the books could wait until later.

Shutting the door and lighting a cigarette, Corbett walked up to his Slayer, a tiny smile crossing his aged face as he sat next to her. "And what do I owe the pleasure?" he remarked in a calm, low voice.

"Haven't seen you in a while, wanted to make sure you were still alive and kicking." Kris mumbled from her arms as she didn't lift her head just yet. She now lifted her shoulders into a shrug, "Never know with the times as they are right now."

Now she lifted her head to look over at Corbett and the dark circles beneath her eyes stood as a testament to just how hard Kris had been pushing herself lately. Dark angry bruises littered her neck from where Rhiannon's grip had pressed and then tightened to near choking.

She managed a weak smile, "How you been?"

Corbett sighed softly, nodding in affirmation as he listened to his Slayer speak. He was about to reply when he glanced over and saw the face before him...along with the dark bags under the eyes and the bruises littering her neck.

Guilt quickly gave way to anger, Corbett's already well-defined face seemingly harder and edgier as he rested his hand on Kris' back. "I sincerely hope whatever caused those is a large bloody mess."

Anger once again gave way to that guilt. Something had happened to Kris, and Corbett hadn't been around for it. Buried in his books, living in the past, hanging out with other Slayers in bars getting pissed...the Watcher had bee doing everything except be a Watcher.

But that was all going to change right now.

"I wish it was that easy," Kris muttered softly as she tightened her hands around each elbow of the opposite arm. "It's not, I'm afraid."

She didn't pull away from his touch as she might have done with someone else. Only a few people were allowed to touch Kris and Corbett happened to be one of those few.

"You might want to talk to your room-mate, he's got a lot going on right now. His Slayer ..she's gone.." She took a breath as she forced the words from her chest, "...dark, like completely and these bruises and the cut across my stomach are the results from a fight with her."

She lifted her eyebrows and expelled a breath, "Alot's going on right now. Demons in Vegas, disappearances...you name it, it's going on." Not to mention a whole lot of her own personal shit.

Matthew.

His Slayer was...who was it he had told Corbett? Oh, right...Rhiannon. Corbett had met her once, his first trip to the bookstore, and she seemed decent enough; certainly not the kind of Slayer who'd all of a sudden just turn dark and rogue.

Then again, from what he'd seen and heard from Faith, she hadn't struck him as the type to go rogue, either.

Part of the Watcher felt sorry for Rhiannon--not to mention Matthew--but at the same time, he wanted to shove his fist down the Slayer's throat for putting her hands on Kris that way.

Fortuately, common sense prevailed, and Corbett decided to attend solely to helping his own Slayer. "Rogue Slayer," he said softly, shaking his head. "Isn't that always just a sodding bag of tricks?"

The Watcher took a drag from his cigarette, having suddenly lost the taste for it. Tossing the still-burning cancer stick to the ground, Corbett added, "I'm sorry. For not being around."

A long pause, and then: "For not being a Watcher."

"She's not herself, Corbett." Kris said with a slight shake of her head, "It's like everything she ever was ..or is, has been stripped away from her leaving this husk of a person."

Kris' expression looked haunted for a very brief moment. "I know of only one entity capable of that and I remember all too clearly my own experiences with her." She gave a slight smirk, "She nearly killed me once, if it hadn't been for Hayden, I wouldn't be here now."

Her rambling was cut off as Corbett apologised to her. She tightened her arms around her elbows once again and each knuckle began to turn white. What could she say to that? Kris took a breath and muttered, "Apology accepted."

She settled a tired brown gaze on Corbett's face, "I'm not the easiest of Slayers, I know this. Got issues with letting people in and letting them help me. It comes from looking after myself for so long even before I was given this gift."

Kris dropped her eyes away, "You're the first Watcher I've actually been okay with, I was a struggle for Dominick because I never opened up to him and I never let him in, not completely. I'm trying but old habits die hard or that's what they say."

“Hayden wasn’t too thrilled about it either,” Kris remarked with a wry smile. How Hayden stayed with her and she never wanted to worry about it because she had him and she was damn grateful.

Kris shook her head, “I never got a name and I was distracted.” She lifted her shoulders into another shrug, “I have a feeling that whatever she did, it was enough to piss these demons off given the amount that happened to be out.”

She propped her chin in her hands and began to tap her fingers against her cheeks. “Who am I going to sort ..shit out with now that Rhiannon’s off her A game? I mean, I have you..Hayden, Matthew, but it isn’t the same as kicking ass with a fellow Slayer especially with one you trust.”

"She"...okay, so it wasn't who Corbett had in mind. Which relieved him...and disappointed him at the same time. Spike was such an enigma, Corbett often figured things would be easier if he didn't have to deal with the folically-fried vampire.

Alas, no such luck.

"I may know of someone," the Watcher said with a glance Kris' way. "There's a new Slayer in town, ran into her lat night."

Kris tilted her head and lifted an inquiring eyebrow. "And this mysterious Slayer would be?" She also couldn't help but wonder how well Corbett knew this new Slayer and if she could be trusted.

"Her name's Faith," the Watcher replied as he killed his spent cigarette against the pavement. "She helped close the Sunnydale Hellmouth, when the Potentials all became Slayers."

It might've also helped Kris to know about Faith's past as a rogue Slayer, but given how frazzled she seemed with regards to Rhiannon, that was probably a discussion better left for another time.

"Between her and Spike, it would seem whatever's drawing everyone and everything here has stepped things up..."

Kris took a mental note of the name and then nodded her head. "I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for her." She stretched her legs out in front of her and then leaned forward to touch her toes as it help to ease out some of the tension in her back.

Corbett glanced the Slayer's way again, noticing her movements. "You sure you're alright?" he asked with a touch of concern.

The Watcher might've been overdoing the whole concerned Watcher bit at the moment, but given how he'd virtually ignored Kris of late, he had some catching up and making up to do.

At least in his mind.

Corbett nodded in understanding, glancing Kris' way. "As am I," he replied with a slight smirk.

He let Kris' words sink in, rolling them over in his head for a few silent moments before he turned to his Slayer in response. "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do."

Corbett couldn't remember where he'd heard that before--or who said it to him--but it was something that stuck with him, even when he decided years ago to walk away from the lifestyle of a "White Hat."

So, Slayer or no, Corbett was all about trying to do the right thing. But having a Slayer made doing so not only easier, but slightly more enjoyable.

Kris gave a wry smile as she glanced across at Corbett, "Actions speak louder than words, always been a fan of that saying." Mostly because for her, that saying was very true.

"And what would you do if the choice you made would force you away from a unit that had been there your entire life? You know the choice you made would signal the end to all of that?" Kris held Corbett's gaze as she waited to hear his answer.

The Watcher's brow furrowed, slightly in confusion fashion, as he listened to his Slayer's question. Scratching under his chin--mostly cause it had suddenly started to itch--he let out a soft sigh before responding.

"Well, it depends on this 'unit' you refer to," he said. "If we're talking the old Council, then sod-all, I'm doing what I have to do. If it's something else--well, I'm afraid I'll need more information to answer that."

Corbett understood Kris was having trouble trusting him...and honestly, the Watcher didn't blame her. He hadn't really given her much reason to of late, but as her Watcher, he still felt compelled to try and earn that trust.

By helping, however he could.

Kris swallowed hard and settled her gaze on the ground. She really wasn't very good at sharing problems let alone talking about them. The only person who ever really heard what was going on with her was Hayden.

"Family matters," She was finally able to say as her fingers curled slightly. "Just something I know needs to be done but ..I know people won't like it."

"Well," the Watcher replied before pausing slightly to give it a little more thought, "if it needs to be done, then I suppose the consequences will just have to be dealt with when they arise."

Despite what might've seemed like a lecture, Corbett's voice was soft and calm, and he tried to convey his advice in a way that wouldn't antagonize or make Kris feel worse. The emotional aspect of the Watcher-Slayer dynamic had never really been Corbett's strngeth, even if he had made significant strides with Teresa in that regard years ago.

But given how heavily the situation seemed to weigh on Kris' mind, Corbett felt it important to try and be sensitive, as opposed to detached bookman guy.

"I hate that word, consequences." Kris remarked with a slow shake of her head, "It's really intimidating." She let loose with a soft laugh before shaking her head again.

Emotional may not have been Corbett's strength but at least with Kris, he didn't have to worry about it so much. The girl wasn't the type for sharing her feelings very easily.

"Whatever happens, I'll still be breathing so it's not all bad."

Corbett was about to respond before stopping in his tracks, his hand clutching his axe tighter as he glared across their surroundings, brows furrowed as he looked for whatever it was Kris sensed.

"I don't see any--"

Before Corbett could sense anything, he heard leaves from a nearby tree rustling. Turning around, he saw a vampire leaping from the tree, landing on his Slayer, pinning her to the ground by her arms. As the hideous creature snarled, bearing its fangs in the moonlight, the Watcher tried to grab it by its greasy black hair, but the vampire knocked him backwards with a fist across Corbett's jaw.

Watcher and axe went spiraling backwards until Corbett was laid out on the ground, struggling to get up as he watched the demonic creature close in on Kris' neck.

No...

Kris was momentarily stunned as the creature leapt from the tree and pinned her to the ground. Her sword spun out of her hand and settled just out of reach, not that she could reach her sword as it was.

She struggled beneath its weight, attempted to lodge a knee between it and her so she had something to push away with and yet it had successfully managed to trap her.

A sharp grunt escaped her as she first felt the vampire's breath on her neck and in a moment of defiance she brought her head up and rammed her forehead into the vampire's. However even this blow didn't seem to phase it and for the first time in a while, Kris released a cry of pain as the vampire bit down into her neck and her eyes fluttered as it began to drain her blood.

Her arm continued to fight against the vampire until eventually she managed to stretch her fingertips out towards the hilt of the sword.

Though concentration was getting harder to get and the will to move was becoming hard to grasp as the blood that kept her alive was being pulled from her by every suck of the vampire's mouth against her neck.

The vampire growled low in its throat as the powerful blood of the Slayer slithered down its throat, its mouth contorted in a devilish snarl as it drained Kris' essence from her body. Its fingernails dug into her wrists, drawing even more blood and causing the Slayer to grow weaker and weaker by the moment.

For the longest time, Corbett was helpless, able only to watch his Slayer attacked without chance for retaliation. The pain in his head throbbed madly through the Watcher's entire body, and it took all the strength his 54-year-old body could muster to crawl in the vampire's direction, content in the creature's distraction to take out his stake--the very stake Kris gave him when they first met months ago--and ready for a strike.

Then, without the vampire even realizing it, Corbett somehow made it to his knees, driving the pointed end of the wooden stick into the creature's back. Fangs withdrew suddenly as the vampire grunted in surprise, and the pain never had a chance ot register before the demon exploded in a smelly explosion of ash and dust.

Weakened from his injuries, Corbett dropped to the ground again, nearly on top of his Slayer. He looked up as best he could, breathing heavily, his hands shaking as he stared at the gaping, bloodied holes on the side of Kris' neck.

"Kris," he said hoarsely. "Say something..."

Kris had dropped to the ground the moment the vampire had released her, she barely flinched as the vampire exploded over her more or less, her eyes were glazed and her skin seemed to have paled considerably. By the time, Corbett reached her, her eyes were closed and her breathing was shallow. Kris' chest was barely even moving and her blood continued to flow from the injuries on her neck.

"..Guess I ..really...messed up..." She managed to gasp out, her eyes blinked open and she now fought to keep them open. Self doubt, disappointment and general apathy had sunk in past the haze as Kris had always been a Slayer who prided herself on keeping the enemy back, not letting them feast on her neck. A hard swallow was taken and it seemed to push even more blood out of the holes on the side of Kris' neck, "..Should have...kneed him ..in the crotch," Her voice was shaking as she spoke.

Corbett didn't know which hurt him more--Kris' injuries or the sudden self-soubt that overcame her. He managed to get back to his knees, the Watcher took a handerchief out of his pocket, unfolding it and pressing the cloth against the Slayer's wounds, trying to stop the bleeding.

"Shh," he said softly, "No Slayer of mine's going to talk like that."

Corbett fished out his cell phone with his free hand, thumb shaking as he dialed 9-1-1. He glanced around as he gave the dispatch all the necessary information, checking to see if anyone had seen the incident, or if the vampire had any friends who decided to tag along.

Satisfied they were alone, Corbett hung up the phone, still nursing the neck wounds on his Slayer. He silently cursed himself even more for his recent slighting of his Slayer, sitting beside her and brushing back a couple strands of her sand-dusted hair.

"Just relax," he said, his voice cracking noticably as he struggled to fight off emotion, "Help is on its way...and I'm here.

"You're going to be alright," he added, taking Kris' hand into his own. "I promise."

Kris closed her eyes briefly until she pulled them open, "Can you ..tell Hayden?" She asked, her voice was weak and her eyes were shaking, obviously she was straining to keep them open and focused on Corbett's face. Her blood had already saturated the hankerchief and Kris was beginning to tremble, the sword lay useless in the sand, her fingers had been shy of it by one inch.

"It was good seeing you.." She muttered softly as she tried to tighten her hand around Corbett's and yet her grip was loose, lacking its usual strength. She swallowed again and her fingers loosened until her grip was slack around Corbett's hand. "..This sucks," She murmured quietly before quirking her lips into a very wry smirk,"No..puns...intended."

Kris' chest continued to rise and fall unsteadily but even with every breath she took, it didn't feel like enough. Her head was spinning and the world around her was darkening.
