Okay, that was a hell of a lot easier than Samantha had expected. Almost too easy, one might say.
Turned out Katherine had indeed held up on her end of the deal, as Sam came home about an hour before sunset to find Edmund slumped over on her doorstep, at the time unconscious. Rocky’s intel had been good; for that, he bought himself another months’ worth of not being staked.
Sam couldn’t help but wonder if she was being set up as she drove to the warehouse where she was to meet Grace and hand the old man over to her. The drive had been quiet, but a soft groan caught the Slayer’s attention, and she couldn’t help but glance up into the rear-view mirror at the man she tossed into the back seat of her police cruiser.
Seemed Edmund was starting to come to. Good; meant when Grace did whatever she was going to do to him, he could scream. Samantha liked that part.
“Wakey wakey,” she called out in a mocking tone. “And before you ask…no, I’m not telling you where we’re going. And if you ask if we’re there yet, I’ll toss you out of this car and let whatever manner of fiend populates this part of town have their way with you.
“Won’t that be fun?”

The former Watcher bowed his head, and the heavy door of the Plymouth opened. He slid into the passenger seat, staring straight ahead. When he pulled it shut, it sounded like the lid of a coffin.
For another long minute, Grace continued to look over the roof of the car at where he'd been standing. A strange sort of grief wandered over her features momentarily, and then was gone. She let out a heavy sigh, then climbed behind the wheel. Her own door slammed shut, a hollow sound in the stillness.
It was almost over.
