Here's To The Night - Eve 6 |
] |
Boden could tell they were getting closer, that prickle across the back of his neck told him so. He’d always been able to tell, always known when they were getting close – too close, when he should run and when he should look over his shoulder.
Before Vegas and before Searchlight leaving had been simple, he’d just pack up his things and go but now there was Mallory and after everything he figured he owed her a goodbye, and most of all - an explanation.
Finding his way to Mallory’s trailer was easy, was always easy but knocking on her door was anything but easy. He had nothing with him, no luggage to carry but he did have plane tickets in his coat pocket.
Tuffy turned out not to mind riding in the truck so much, but the vet was a different story. That probably had a lot to do with the shots, though, and there were apparently going to be more where those came from. Mallory fixed the dog a makeshift bed in the living room, offering him a rawhide chew as a reward. He sniffed at it, then finally deigned to give it a nibble.
The knock was a sudden distraction, and the redhead called, "Just a sec, I'll be right there," before giving Tuffy a sympathetic scratch behind the ears and wandering to the door to answer it.
"Boden, hey." Her expression brightened, and she stood aside a bit to add, "C'mon in, I was just about to fix something to eat. The dog's in kind of a mood, but after I feed him he'll feel better. Want a glass of water?"

"Be safe, Boden," she said, knowing it was unnecessary, because fighting, protecting himself, was something he did very well. One of her hands intertwined with one of his, the two of them simply resting together in the new twilight.
Making a memory for both of them to hang onto.
