------ Non Journal Entry ------
Matthew was out walking, his head down and his eyes on the ground. He had a lot on his mind, this thing with Jo and the message left on his phone by Rhiannon. He had dropped by her place but she had been out and so he was just walking. Walking trying to clear his mind and trying to center himself. His boots scuffed at the sand as his walk took him out to the desert, sweat trickled down over the side of his face, and his skin was turning red in some places. He was used to it by now and he had accepted that his skin would burn.
And then a sound caught his attention. His head snapped up. His eyes widened as they came to fall on a middle-aged woman with long dark hair. Her blue eyes were wide and sought the distance for something or someone. At that moment, Matthew was frozen to the spot. His own eyes widened and his body was completely still. He felt almost like someone had walked over his grave, a cold shiver ran down his spine and the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. How could this be? She was dead, she had died. He had watched as her mother had suffered a fatal heart attack, he could still remember the noises she had made and the look in her eyes as she had passed away.
His hand went to the chain around his neck, his fingers curled around it and tightened. Was he seeing things? Memories of days gone by flashed through his mind. He recalled the first time he had seen his mother's face and had called her "mum" and then, he remembered bringing his first girlfriend home and the large meal his mother had cooked for them both. But for every happy memory, he could not escape the last one he had of his mother. Her face screwed up in pain, her eyes wide and her skin pale. He had watched as his mother had collapsed. As her heart had given up. His father had told him that it was his fault, if he hadn't been fighting with her, his mother wouldn't have died.
This was something Matthew had come to believe but seeing her now confused him and whilst the logical part of his brain knew this wasn't possible without some form of magic. The other part of his mind, the one happy to see her overwhelmed all his sense and all his years of Watcher training. He stepped towards her and uttered." Mum?"
His mother's head jerked around to him and she promptly screamed before backing away." I..I.." Her head shook from side to side." Where am I? Who are you?!"
Matthew's eyes flickered with the hurt her words had stirred inside but he suppressed that feeling and simply held up his hands to show he meant no harm." My name is Matthew Stone and I'm not here to hurt you." Please believe me, he thought to himself silently. Why didn't his mother believe him? Why was she back? He had seen stranger things in his time but this was too unbelievable to be true. Matthew wanted to pinch himself, to make sure he wasn't dreaming.
How many times had he dreamt of seeing her again? How many times had he wished he could tell her how much he loved her and how sorry he was for everything?
His mother nodded her head slowly." And where am I?"
" You're in a place called Searchlight." Matthew explained slowly. He took another step towards the woman he knew as his mother and yet, she didn't know him.
The woman turned her head to look around her." Why--Why am I here?" She reached up with her slim hands, her nails went to her hair and her eyes shut." I don't understand."
Matthew finally reached her side and his arms went around her. For some unknown reason, his mother, the woman with no memory of the man beside her, melted into his embrace. Her arms circled around him and her hands clung to him. She didn't understand, she knew she wouldn't hug just anyone but yet, she didn't remember this Matthew. She had no idea who he was or who she was.
" I'll help you understand. I promise." Matthew whispered softly.
