The Masquerade
New Year's Eve
Excalibur

For the highly anticipated masquerade, management of the Excalibur resort had spared no expense in creating a medieval atmosphere. Outside the resort, the castle turrets were brightly lit, and so was the walk alongside the moat. Colorful flags cracked in the wind. Costumed men on horseback flanked the resort's entrance doors, while employees dreased as peasants took admission fees and ushered the masked guests to the banquet hall. The room was quite large, with space enough to have an eating area full of banquet tables on one side, and a dance floor to the other.

Light was provided by candle. Some of the wall and ceiling mounted candles were electric, while those on the tables were wax, to allow for ambience. The banquet tables carried a wide variety of finger foods, including meats, cheeses, loaves of dark bread, thick soups, and a few fruits and vegetables. Beverages included ale, water sweetened with honey, and a few more modern drinks. At the head of the banquet hall, a family of actors was seated at a large table. They played the part of royalty with more enthusiasm than historical accuracy, laughing and allowing employee musicians to play for them and courtiers to flirt with them.

At regular intervals, paid dancers put on elaborate shows, doing traditional group dances that had them clapping and twirling.

In the wings, there was an actual warlock paid by Excalibur to work a few glamour spells to help set the mood. Most of his work went into lighting and scents, though he succumbed to temptation once and set a rustic armored knight into temporary motion, just to freak a woman out.

At near midnight, the guests would be ushered outside to watch fireworks by the moat.

From the dramatic main entrance, with its horsemen and ushers in livery, to the decorated expanse of the banquet hall, the masquerade set an authentic mood. Guests approached with postures of curiosity, but slipped into excitement upon entering. Behind their masks, they oohed and ahhed over the multicolored fabrics draped from the ceiling, the golden glow of candles, the smell of meats and the sound of musicians strumming instruments. They wondered if they should wander around first. Would there actually be a fire-breathing performer, or was the employee pulling their legs? They wondered aloud if there would be regular dances in between the formal ones, or if they'd have to clumsily attempt ballroom. They eventually decided they'd need a drink first. Probably two.

Rhiannon walked in behind the group. Her dress was burgundy and long, with gold stitching in the bodice. It cinched in tight below her breasts and fell straight to the floor. She had surfed the internet for last-minute deals but eventually rented this one from a costume shop. The owner tried to talk her into something with a bustle. Never in a million years. The mere fact of her attendance was miracle enough. A puffy dress would be pushing it.

She held her mask (an understated one; no animal heads here) and watched from the periphery. Tonight was part of her newfound determination to live a more well-rounded life. She had made dry remarks to Mallory about trying to be more social. If this was the event in Las Vegas, then sooner or later, she was bound to run into someone she knew.

And if not, there was always the pack of cigarettes tied to her thigh under the dress (in with one resolution, out with the other). She could go out to the moat, smoke three in a row, and get home before the ball dropped. No one would be the wiser.

Fancy dress. Fuckin' fancy dress. If Whistler met the idiot who insisted on playing dress-up on New Year's, he'd give him a piece of his mind. The man was a fish-out-of-water at the best of times, and in the penguin suit he sported (a last minute rental from Bob's Tuxedo-porium) he had to supress the urge to adjust constantly. And then then was the lack of his hat. It just wouldn't go, so he was forced to go with a more... formal chapeau.

Somewhere above, the Powers That Be were probably snikkering at their Agent, decked out in Top Hat and Tails.

Happy fuckin' New Year, indeed.

"Oh my god. I could rebuild my club for what they dropped on this!"

Star took the peacock mask off her face, as if she could see better when it wasn't through two eyeholes. Last New Year's, where had she been? Probably galavanting around the Witching Hour with her coworkers-turned-friends. The fact that she couldn't actually remember was clue enough. Inebriation. Blessed be.

But this shinding was swank to the nines. Star's new income (if somewhat paltry) had allowed her to actually buy the dress on her body. Okay, that was a lie. She dipped into her savings and blew a few hundred on it. But hey! Providing the apartment she shared with Leah didn't fall down, it would last her a while. Also providing she could bring herself to wear the same party dress twice. Which was doubtful. Anyway, it was a gorgeous green and blue affair, reminiscent of the fowl she was imitating. It brought to mind that bitchy stepsister in Ever After, but Star definitely wore it better and who the hell cared about a Barrymore flick anyway?

She got a drink. The goblet -- and this thing actually qualified as such -- was weighty and it made her thankful that her mask was a no-hands affair. A girl at a party always needed a free hand. For... shaking.

Victoria was in a positively vampish mood. There was a certain edge to her, that evening, not usually displayed. A veritable itch, laying just under emotional skin, threatening to bite and scratch in ways unpleasant.

The growing independence within her had been crafted, further still, by recent events and her mask over eyes was as black as the rest of her clothing, although with just a hint of what might almost be described as viciousness, about its aesthetic.

Not surprising, really, when one considered the multitude of costumes she had bought in, at her own establishment. A lot of them had escaped the destruction to infrastructure and the vampiress was in what amounted to a slight variation on her 'vampiric priestess' outfit.

Noting Star's unmasked features, Victoria turned with a, "Hey." A smile upon her own, although more for formality's sake, than anything else.

Not that sadness was eating her, no. Annoyance was. Annoyance and the need to get out, in an attempt to move forward and forget about unlife, if only for a brief while or so.

"The exotic bird look really suits you, y'know."

Who better for games of castle and candlelight, than a Princess...?

Like some eternal butterfly forever caught between timeless panes of glass, Drusilla wandered through in more of a glide than any predictable walking motion. She looked every bit the part of her fairytale persona and almost certainly because she had been existing through it for longer than most could ever testify to living.

A place she could retreat to... Could hide in... Could command all the little pixies and watch them obey, from its battlements of poison ivy and thorns.

"I should like the moat to be filled with bloody eels," she spoke absently to a costumed 'guard'. "And per'aps your 'ead on a pretty spike, so I may wave at you from the balcony, hmm...?"

Feeling distinctly uncomfortable, the man just politely nodded her way. A gigglesome laugh received from the woman, as she passed on by, intrigued by the festivities yet to come.

Drusilla's wanderings took her near a pillar. In the shadows behind, a small face peered out. Its eyes were brown and its cheekbones high. While the vampire had an ethereal quality, so too did the girl spirit who watched the murderess traipse by. Once certain no human eyes were on her, Hannah dared to step onto the sidewalk in costume. Her dress was medieval in style, but green rather than the blue she typically chose. Her hair was pinned in a knot and a feathery mask was secured to her face, making her look like an emerald fairy. The slippered feet she traveled on didn't quite touch the ground.

If ever she had a chance to pretend she was one of the living, without fear of discovery, this night was it!

It was hardly the first royal court Erato had played in. Nevertheless it was probably one of the few which were both fake and impressive. In scale, at least. Even the hotel rooms were themed in a very expensive way.

Intrigued at the chance to indulge in some social mingling, she had adopted the more bipedal guise, now reliqnuishing herself of fur coat at the door and stepping on in. "Thank you," the foreign beauty spoke, upon being passed a beverage.

It was enough to put a girl in the mood for a jousting tournament, of which, she was sure, there would very probably be one. At this place, there very often was so.

Taking a sip of the contents, the brunette gazed over her surroundings, taking note of who was there and what they likely were. Masks might conceeal a face, but there were always other clues to act on.

Leah had arrived early, wanting to see and be seen in an outfit that had cost her quite a bit of money. The hybrid sipped her drink and watched the dancers with a critical eye and decided that they weren't as good as the people she'd performed with at Fang Noir...now that group could dance!

Her disguise wasn't much of one, just a small mask for formalities sake.

"Oh wow!" Julie looked around the banquet hall in amazement, the organizers of the masquerade had really outdone themselves. The lighting provided just the right sort of atmosphere for the party, and Julie intended on enjoying herself.

And the smells...the werewolf was practically salivating from the scent of so much meat wafting through the air.

She turned her head to look at Connor, "Ever been to one of these before? I've always read about them but I've never been to one."

"Fancy dress parties aren't exactly a second home for me," Connor replied with a faint smirk. He tugged restlessly on the collar of his shirt, feeling wildly out of place. He could also smell vampires, as in plural, which had the hairs on the back of his neck trying to stand up. The Destroyer rubbed a hand over the nape of his neck, trying to settle them back into place. Tonight, he was just like everyone else. For however long he could make it last.

"Let me guess, you want to eat first," he said to Julie in a teasing voice. Even their combined appetites were unlikely to put much of a dent in the spread the caterers had set out, though. Eating first, then maybe dancing. He felt like he was from another planet in this situation.

Just like everyone else. Yeah, right.

Not one for social events such as this Joseph Tropiano was a rare face amongst a crowd more than accustomed to dining with the rich and the famous. He figured that given it was New Years Eve he should make some form of effort to acknowledge the last year and the year that lay ahead, wherever it would take him.

He'd gone so far as to rent a pitch black suit and he was a striking figure, from the broad shoulders to the narrowing pants and the rich golden skin. Joseph had a certain sense of humour so instead of the masks that he could have chosen, he'd selected a porcelain white half of a mask that resembled the one from the phantom of the opera. No one could ever fault Joseph's air for the dramatic.

Joseph hung close to the edges, watching and sharing snippets of conversations with strangers, all of which were given with a charming smile and a confident demeanour.

"Comin' through, look out!"

Grace had squinted at the ad about the masquerade before saying to hell with it and deciding to attend. Costumes were not normally her thing, but she did like a good party when she could find one. Parties meant booze if nothing else, and a night out never got old. She'd found a plain black mask amid the chaos of her belongings, and she wove her way through the crowd before swiping a drink from a passing waiter's tray.

The vampire promptly backed into someone while trying to avoid a collision with another server carrying a full tray of small sandwiches, and she turned on one foot. "Sorry," she said tersely. "Crowds make me clumsy, I guess."

Most people would expect to see Bethany Richards in a full length dramatic piece of design that hung off her curves and showed off her feminine form to its very best, but Bethany had always been one for shaking people's beliefs and upsetting the natural order of things.

She'd foregone a dress and changed into a very nice form fitting suit, one that complimented her feminine side but at the same time more than complimeted the masculine. Heels brought the dark clothing to a polished finish and her dark and silver mask accentuated high cheekbones and rich eyes.

Bethany reached out and stole a glass from a nearby table, curling slender fingers and resting polished red nails against the crystal as she took a few sips, weaving in and out of the crowd.

Playing hide-and-seek in plain site was just so much fun for the vampire. Passing for human was easy enough; you only needed to remember the simple things like fake-breathing. Given her outfit this night -- a burgundy, beaded strapped corset -- that posed a minor struggle. Another in the long list of things the redhead didn't miss from her former life.

She did miss the taste of alcohol. While Deanna could consume the champagne offered, and its eventual effects still held true, the enjoyment of the drink also had to be faked. She scowled underneath the feathered mask, but the downturned lips moved upwards when she spotted an old acquaintance across the room.

As Hannah stepped softly towards the doors of the banquet hall , it almost seemed as if they opened with a flourish just for her. She breathed in, enchanted in the way a much younger girl might be. Those who were accustomed to fancy parties might find it an average soiree, but for Hannah, the newness of nights like this had never worn off. It was a party like she dreamed of when her grandmother read her bedtime stories. Knights and ladies in waiting and dresses swirling across a polished floor...

She laced her fingers together and ducked inside. The very first person she was was Deanna.

"Oh!" Hannah slipped behind a tall guy and covered her face, before remembering that no one would look at a short blonde and expect it to be her, and that she was dressed in a costume that obscured most of her features. This was as safe a place to hide as any.

Newly brave, she came back out and let herself search the room for familiar faces.

Having butted his cigarette, Whistler had gone back inside and ordered a beer from the bar. He scoped around the edges of the party, feeling slightly out of place. He was fine in crowds when he could blend in. Given the tails and top hat, that wasn't going to happen so well.

The Agent kept one eye out for a redhead that gave off a vampiric vibe, just in case. He'd never met Deanna in person but she was enough to cause Rhiannon grief, and while he wouldn't engage, knowing her enemy could come in handy down the line.

He criss-crossed in a lazy pattern, sipping his beer when he felt the buzz. He turned on his heel, groused slightly as his ankle rubbed the leather material the wrong way.

"Pixie!" he yelled out, spotting Hannah.

Women.

Darian had recovered from his temporary ailment and arrived at the Masquerade looking dapper, in a tuxedo and black mask. Combined with the hard set of his jaw, he looked either intimidating or rakish, depending on point of view.

Inwardly, he hoped he didn't look like Zorro. He was not a fan of the mask.

After dancing with Deanna and building up what could only be classified as a good sweat Bethany slipped away after having kissed the vampiress on the cheek and spoken words that promised she would see her again and soon.

She tilted her head as her eyes fell upon a familiar figure and her lips curled as she advanced, winding an arm around Darian's neck from behind until teeth were able to skirt over his pulse.

"Evening," she purred softly before leaning back just enough so if he turned his head he would see her face hidden beneath the mask.

Self-conscious. That was how she felt.

She'd acquiesced to a fancy dress because she knew Victoria was mildly pissed with her, but Mallory couldn't have felt more awkward if she'd suddenly found herself at a nudist camp. Or a Baptist tent revival. Keeping her mask in front of her face, the redhead picked her way through the crowd, lamenting the existence of heeled shoes.

The things she did to make her girlfriend happy.

There was a very tall man lurking attractively near one of the ice sculptures, and Mallory watched the way the lights glinted off of the frozen surface before remembering to watch where she was going. "Excuse me, sorry," she said to his shirtfront, wondering how he managed to look so well-pressed in a crush like this.

He felt ridiculous. He'd never socialized on New Year's Eve before, not among a large crowd like this, and the fact that it was a costume ball, of all things, was not helping his sense of humor. He had a drink in his hand, at least.

Oliver skulked through the doors, the purple mask he'd gotten for the occasion shielding his face from view. He'd at least take one turn around the place, see what it was like. They'd done an impressive job on the decorations, he had to admit. The spellcaster watched the lights overhead as they twinkled, debating on how long he planned to stay. A brand new year was approaching at last.

Maybe this one would be better than the last.

The first time looking someone in the eye after spending a night together could be nerve-wracking. Though their memories would've had the tally slightly higher, history only recorded the night spent in Oliver's hotel room. It was certainly the time that mattered in Hannah's heart. Afterwards, there wasn't a chance for them to react. The PTBs had snatched her away to take care of Tristan. Since she promised him she'd stay, Hannah wasn't sure how Oliver would feel about that. Or her.

Maybe he did have a date, or he was hoping he'd run into a particular person. There was no way he'd expect for Hannah to be out in public at a masquerade, but there he was, and he looked very handsome, and oh...

She wrung her hand to keep from biting her nails.
