The Birthright Crew
The autograph tables for at least some of the convention guests were vacant. The organisers had managed to score quite the coup with getting so many members of 'Birthright' under the same roof. For many, if not all, it even seemed to be their first time as such a guest. Their first real opportunity to engage with the very people their work had inspired and entertained.
Working on the show was not necessarily the same as being a devoted fan of the same. It could be a real eye-opener to see some of the merchandise available, if one did not frequent the right Internet forums. In some cases, it was difficult to work out what was official and what was made up by devoted viewers. At least five could be seen wearing the same designed T-shirt; a picture of Azure, the comical ninja chef from the early days of 'Birthright', emblazoned across the front, complete with eye patch and the slogan, 'WHITE EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY', written immediately beneath it. Others wore a picture of thoughtful Hannah and the famous 'WWHD' acronym, or Elfleda under a shadowy stars and stripes banner, in a satirical rendition of a would-be Presidential campaign: 'CORRUPTION 2012 - THE ONLY HONEST VOTE'.
Other actors and assorted VIPs were still doing their thing in other parts of the building, but now it was time for the 'Birthright' panel to open themselves up to the public, microphones in hand and a chattering sound among the audience raising up to a cheer as the host came on and each actor took their place.
"Something tells me you guys might be getting your money's worth, today..." A corresponding ripple of laughter was heard and the smiling MC - decked out in full imitation Lorne costume - continued. "OK, we heard of a little show called 'Birthright' and figured they might need the ratings," he joked, someone at the back shouting out something completely unintelligible and producing another wave of good humour from the audience.
"So! Without further ado, let's have a big round of applause for the heroes and villains on the show Fox wishes it could cancel on a whim - let's hear it for the 'Birthright' crew!"
The audience did just that. Those attending this particular question and answer session were there specifically because they were fans of the show, whether casual or hardcore. Anyone else was off getting autographs from other guests. This was a moment of appreciation, from the viewers to the people on stage and the sheer volume of claps echoed loudly around the auditorium.
"Elfleda! Rhiannon! Victoria! Stella! Diana! Lei..."
All their character names were shot off in quick succession, the applause getting louder with each and every one, showing the screen idols with deserved appreciation. Only once it died down did the host begin to speak again.
"Alright, now there are microphones to either side of the hall. If you'd like to ask a question, just queue up and our guests will do their very best to answer it," he explained, seeing the first already get in line. "Ah, looks like we've already got our first! Go right ahead!"
