Winter Solstice Thread, Part 3
The Black Hole

It began as one scientist’s miscalculated journey from one universe to its alternate. For Andre, it was a fortunate accident, one he had no intention of correcting. His world had been decimated by the awakening of the Old Ones, and monsters walked that earth now; its people dead or hiding.

This other world had escaped that fate. Andre would’ve done anything to stay. But his attempt to cover his tracks only widened what had become a weakened ‘tear’ between his old world and this one. For long weeks, creatures knocked at the door, some intentionally and some not. Each bit of traffic through the tear only worsened the situation until finally, on the winter solstice, a multitude of tears opened and beasts beyond imagination began to spill onto this plane of existence.

But contradictory universes cannot exist in the same time, the same place, without consequence.

The longer the tears remain open, the more unstable things become.

While people and demons on the streets below fight for survival, a virtual ‘black hole’ begins to open in the sky, as two competing universes struggle to equalize and can‘t. A sort of gravitational pull begins to tug home the creatures that belong on the other side, and along with them, victims that have been grabbed up as sources of food.

The wind howls. Acid rain falls. The ground buckles upward. Lightning forks from the noxious clouds to the ground, and strikes all manner of structures in between. The tear becomes greedy, and soon it seems as if it won’t be satisfied to only pull back what belongs to it.

It wants to swallow up this world, too.

"Phew," Leah exhaled in relief as they passed inside the doors to Circus Circus. The lobby seemed oddly untouched compared to the pandemonium outside, and the hybrid could see people pulling handles on slot machines off in the distance as if nothing was out of the ordinary. It was good to know that some things never changed, even when the world was ending people would still be hooked on slots.

The girl looked back and forth between her companions. "Now what?"

Almost as soon as the words were out of her mouth, the ground began to tremble violently. "Oh shit." Whatever was going on, that couldn't be good.

Once the mysterious rumbling had ceased, Star came out of hiding behind a very large, artificial plant. It had dust on it. Fuzzy palms. She made an ‘eww’ face. “Well... It looks like we’re safe in here--”

BOOM!

The lightning strike must’ve been close, aka on the building they were hunkering down in. Whose bright idea was this hotel, anyway? Wasn’t it directly underneath the big hole in the sky?

The electricity flickered once, and then went out. A collective groan went up from the gambling crowd, part of the ever-present public denial of the supernatural. A row of emergency lights glowed fluorescent overhead, but it wasn’t much.

Star leaned around the plant to look outside, where the drive-up overhang was. A couple of demons clambered off the roof and went lumbering into traffic. One got struck by an oncoming car and rolled into the windshield. The other grabbed a lady by her hair and started dragging her off.

It would’ve been par for the course, except... something changed. An un-seeable something, like an invisible bungee cord that began to pull the demons back. Maybe they were on a snatch-and-run mission.

The car got lifted a few meters in the air before the demon let go of it, and it crashed back onto the pavement.

The lady got snapped up by her hair. The last thing Star saw of her was kicking feet.

"She lost her shoe."

The car sailed over a gulch in the road, out of which a small army of three-eyed, hoofed demons crawled. The undercarriage took off two or three of their heads on the way by. Goo splashed up on the windows. Stripper-girls squealed and clung to one another for dear life. Hannah just hollered like her head was in danger too.

“Aaa-AAAAH-AAAAAH- Ooof!”

The tires hit an identical ramp down on the other side. The shocks absorbed some of it, but Rhiannon’s bumpers sparked and scratched all over the pavement.

Hannah steered the car viciously and yelled, “I hope I didn’t bust the oil pan!”

"I think that's the least of our worries."

Outside the passenger side window, the world was rapidly becoming a scene reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz. Tornado-like winds were scooping up anything not nailed down and sucking it into an inverted cone, pluming upwards. Whistler wouldn't have been surprised to see a cow fly past.

He held tight to the dashboard as the car skidded sideways. Even inside the vehicle, the wind was gaining force. The Agent had to yell over the sound as he fumbled to close the vents. "We're gonna need to find something rooted to the ground before we get yanked into Neverwhere!"

It wasn’t the kind of question Rhiannon got asked a lot. How good is your--. Fill in the blank. She looked up, head cocked, ready to be offended by it. Hello, slayer?

But then, fuck it. It was reasonable.

“Good enough.” Rhiannon walked over to Connor and offered him the other makeshift stake, its end ragged enough to puncture whatever needed dusting. “I’m no Olga Korbut, but I wouldn‘t worry.”

She looked at the emergency stairwell. “Alright, so we open that door, we climb the access ladder, we break open the roof hatch, what’s the worst that could happen? We get yanked out and they eat us for hors d'oeuvres before coming in here and eating all the guests. Sound about right?”

One way or the other, she was going to do it. Rhiannon knew that much. Either he was with her, or he wasn’t.

“You want me to go through first? That way if I get eaten, you can shut the door.” She tried to sound diplomatic about it. Rhiannon went into the stairwell and waited with one hand on the rungs.

Connor took the thick piece of oak from Rhiannon, hefted its weight against that of his makeshift spear. This time there was no Angel to send him away, no father to tell him to go. This was his fight too. His fight, his life.

"I don't care who goes first," he told Rhiannon, glancing back down the hall towards the elevators. "But when that door opens, I'm with you." He followed after her, glanced up towards the roof hatch. He could hear the wind howling outside, as though it too were a living thing trying to get into the building.

Protect. Protect and destroy.

"I'm ready."

Darian tipped his head back and scoped out the higher ground she wanted to take. “One of us on either side,” he indicated the topmost level of the club, and the shadows that would provide a kind of sniper cover. “In the recesses there, behind the lighting equipment.” He checked again for his extra ammunition, and found it still waiting in his pockets. The open roof gave view of the worsening weather outside. Darian smiled at her. “Try not to get struck by lightning.”

Thunder boomed overhead, so loudly that it rattled the remaining glass shards that hadn't been knocked loose by the uninvited guests that had now begun to take full advantage of the human buffet they'd found awaiting them. Grace looked up at the ripped-open sky, then at the vantage points of the upper level of the club.

Good enough.

She looked up at Darian, returned his smile. The demon still barely had a hair out of place despite the blood spatters on his shirt. Things were probably going to get a lot dirtier before this whole thing was over.

She went up on her toes, using the fabric of his shirt as a handhold before kissing him full on the mouth. "Stay alive," she muttered before disappearing into the further recesses of the shadows. "Fuck knows somebody around here ought to be able to keep up with me."

It was true, even in that world, many still fought.

But to fight is chaotic. To live, to love, is chaos personified.

That which she served favours not chaos, but the rigidity of order. The unyielding of granite. The face of stone. Those high enough in the order of things understood that well. It was the very reason they sought such overwhelming control.

And from the gloom, Leviathan's Bride could be seen emerging from the maelstrom. One outside of its effects, divorced from all but the darkest of worlds, descending from high upon a billowing cloud of black fire.

"So, the primordial feast begins..."

Destiny Brown smiled at the unexpected praise. "Thank you. I feel very, very disgusting right now. I just want to get home and wash up and burn these clothes. Okay, maybe not burn the clothes. Maybe some really really good bleach."

A rumble shook the ground and almost knocked her off her feet.

"That didn't sound good. I think it's safe to say that I will not be going home any time soon."

Slowly, she saw the wings of the dragon lift off the dragon's back and get pulled by invisible forces towards Circus Circus. Turning her head, she saw the rip in the sky.

"Definitely not going home any time soon. Any ideas?"

"I feel your pain, girlfriend," Faith sympathized with a slight grimace at her own blood splattered clothes. "Man, I feel like Carrie on fuckin' prom night."

What she wouldn't give for a shower right now! If only the rain falling from the sky had a little more water and a little less acid. As it was, the putrid quality of it only seemed to make the blood staining her skin even worse.

Then there was a whole lot of rumbling and Faith found herself worrying less about cleanliness and more about what the hell was going on. Earthquakes in Nevada? That wasn't good. The wind was also picking up around them, blowing things around them with a tornado-like force. Oh fuck, this really was doomsday wasn't it? All those religious freaks were right after all.

All she could do was watch as her dead dragon was whipped up into the sky and pulled into the swirling vortex over one of the hotels. Demons were being picked up left and right and Faith had to wonder if they were next. They had to find cover somewhere and fast! But first, there were a few demons that hadn't been sucked up yet that needed to be dealt with.

Any ideas? There was only one thought on her mind. "Yeah, I say we slay!"

Then she went into battle mode. The demons, now more anxious than ever with the vacuum-like vortex, were swarming the two dragon slayers, probably thinking that if they're gonna get sucked back into Hell, they may as well go out with the death of a slayer on their hands. A thing with tentacles came at Faith, smacking her across the thigh with one of the its squirming arms. Turns out? The tentacles had some kind of barbs on them. Blood dripped from her leg as Faith punched the tentacle hard to loosen it from its grip on her leg.

"Son of a bitch!" she cried out as she looked down at her now torn jeans. She hated to sound like Buffy, but why did all her favorite clothes always have to get torn up in the heat of battle?

The fire was back as she grabbed up a sharp piece of metal and hurled it at the mutant octopus-like demon thing. It hit the demon in its middle, stopping it in its tracks, but a moment later, the pole was pulled out and was being hurled right back at her. Man, she hoped Destiny's reflexes were as fast as hers!

Having just killed himself another demon, and wearing a healthy amount of demon blood on his shirt, Corbett went about scanning the crowd, searching for other survivors and other nasties to possible kill. He decided to leave the werewolf to his own devices, content in introducing himself to the fellow and having that beer once he was less furry again.

In the meantime, there was an apocalypse to hopefully stop.

Somewhere in the commotion, the dragon had been killed, something the Watcher was surprised he hadn't noticed until he'd seen its massive carcass. It seemed his Slayer had bagged herself a pretty good one in the dragon--if it was indeed her who killed it.

She was riding it, so...

"FAITH!" Corbett called out, unable to find her among the madness that was the creatures and the people colliding with the giant tear in the sky. Whatever caused the tear, Corbett didn't know, but he hoped someone around here would figure out a way to close it, because this was one of those "gets worse before it gets better" scenarios, only without the getting better.

"Faith!"

Where was she?

Oh, bloody...

Of all nights for Spike to find himself out of the crypt looking for a festive night on the town in Las Vegas, he just had to pick the one in which the world might end. The vampire was suddenly starting to recall why he'd never felt very festive this time of year.

Spike had actually sensed things going awry before reaching the city limits, sensing a disturbance in the air around him and getting this undeniable gut feeling that lots and lots of nasties were on their way. He guessed that being a formerly evil thing, he'd be able to tell that sort of thing before anyone else.

But it wasn't until he was standing at what was the sight of the celebration, lit cigarette in his mouth as he watched the giant tear in the sky and all manner or creatures tearing each other and plenty of helpless humans apart that it sank in.

This was bad. Like, apocalypse bad.

But so long as Spike was around, why not have a go, eh? He hadn't had a good round of fisticuffs in a long while, and if it meant saving some lives and averting yet another end-of-the-world? All the better.

So Spike crushed his cigarette before shifting into his game face, grinning and running full-sprint into the chaos, leaping onto the back of some massive cyclops demon, grabbing its greasy hair and pounding his fist into the back of the creature's head.

It wouldn't kill the demon, but it was a fun way to start.

He just hoped there were enough White Hats on hand to stem the tide.

Katherine/Deanna
[info]kitty_fangs

Well, it wasn't an entirely unexpected reaction. Even so, when in the grip of an extraordinarily grateful Deanna's passionate thanks, even Katherine had reason to flail for balance.

Suffice to say, altitude was not the reason Katherine began to feel a little dizzy.

Damn, she needed to get laid...

"I, uh... Yeah," the brunette began, with a comical clearing of voice. "Well, y'know what they say. If ya' can't beat 'em, then rip their spine out. It'll look good on the résumé."

Immediately behind her, a winged monstrosity big and ugly enough to give King Kong the shits loomed forth. Its bloated carcass suspended in mid-air by flapping sheets of leather attached to a festering, open ribcage of undigested bile. The head akin to that of a blind, armoured turtle, now opening slavering jaws with a mind to feast on vampire prey...

SNAP

That's what supernature got for designing things with long, scraggy vulture necks: A swift and efficient reply of the physical kind. Or at least it did when getting in Katherine's way.

Those down below were probably grateful for what remained of the beast's several hundred tons of dead weight being swept up into the storm above.

"Either that or join 'em. Any idea what their dental plan's like?"

It had been waiting.

For thousands of years, the lost superpower bided time in its prison and it called to them. It was a forgotten beacon in the desert, a threat that all but the eldest powers had long considered extinct. The great balance had been maintained at the Exile’s expense, but so long as the secret was kept, none would set it free.

Its only hold on this world was that it could make the special ones take notice, in the un-illuminated corners of their minds. They would be drawn to it, but not know of it, and before it could be discovered, there was almost always a calamity. Death in large numbers. A town that became suspicious for its catastrophes, but no one could figure out why.

The Exile understood that someday an opportunity would present itself for freedom. A freedom which it considered eventual, necessary, and worth gaining despite any collateral damage, including the toll on human and demon life that it might take. The earth’s mortal and immortal lower creatures, even the supernaturally awakened ones, were considered fair sacrifice. It could be a selfish entity.

Despite its selfish nature, for many eons it had patience.

It knew its time would come. That it could draw them close, and that the slow burn of their pain, their triumphs, their battles, their suffering and rebirths, left a signature in the desert air, a signature that could be sapped of karmic weight, the energy of destruction and re-creation, and that it would become stronger for it.

In the later years, there was some small amount of puppetry. It would reach out with its unseen fingers and give nudges to those who were open to its influence, and through their eyes, their ears, and their hands, it would bring chaos. Disorder. The very energy it fed itself upon. And there was no particular rhyme or reason to those it chose, most of the time. They were simply present and capable, their minds like unlocked doors to be opened. When it had done what it could, it withdrew and left them without memory of whatever havoc they had caused. Such a thing could be considered kind.

Fortune had been kind, too.

Andre¢.

There was none of the Exile’s craftiness in the scientist’s missteps. Andre¢ was only human, fallible, a Wolfram and Hart employee to the end, and he ached for survival and escape from his hellish version of the world. His tear would take down this one, too, if someone did not intervene.

Malevolent, benevolent, it mattered not whose side it was on. The Exile wanted this world to be whole when freedom came, for itself.

As the tear above the desert loomed large and crackled with power... As the people and demons on the streets below it fought and won and lived and died... Their struggle was just enough.
