Winter Solstice Thread, Part 2
And the band played on.

Acoustically, musical rhythms washed over the crowd as the 'Legends of Rock and Roll' entertained the masses. People ate and drank merrily, some performed their own version of the Ice Capades on the imported rink. Safely staged bonfires warmed those gathered. Fireworks intermittantly lit up the sky.

A different sort of light show pulsed in the desert outside of Searchlight as well. Tendrils of energy lashed out, illuminating the night sky. Only these travelled upwards and outwards. Three seconds. Silence. Twelve seconds. Darkness. Ninety seconds...

***

In another world, a permanent crack leading from their confines had taken notice. Old Ones, creatures without name, monsters older than time, they were all drawn to the very spot. Their earth was corrupted, soiled, dissipated.

The small slip promised a new, fertile hunting ground.

For the first time in years, they stopped fighting one another. Turned their attention to a doorway that held so much promise.
And pushed.

***

Another pulse erupted. Two minutes, three seconds.

***

Heave.

***

And the walls of Jericho came tumbling down.

Hands, bodies, heads, all pushed through, and the tear gave birth to a monstrosity it should never carry to term. This breach wounded the night sky, turning it a dull ochre. Rain erupted from non-existent clouds and bleached the sand.

More came. Shuffled. Thundered.

The air was foul, too pure for their liking. That would be rectified soon enough.

A second rift opened three miles to the north, spilling acrid air and a leathery creature with wings.

***

The lightshow over Las Vegas continued, but not from the artificial display of lit chemicals. A hazy, duplicitous Aurora Borealis hovered in the air. It was a thing of beauty, and a portent of things to come.

***

A third, fourth and fifth rift, all trailing an invisible fault line. A beacon to the ever expanding throng outside Searchlight.

And noises, light. Humanity. All to the north.

Their appetite whetted, they began a trek. Towards the twinkling oasis that was Las Vegas.

An excellent place to start the conquest of a new world.

Fireworks.

Rhiannon wondered if it could always be this way with him.

She tipped her head back and let the brilliant lights in the sky dance on her closed eyelids. They burst from red to blue to purple and green, and finally an amber color that settled in the air like stardust and refused to burn its way to the ground below. She took in hazily the gasp of awe from the crowd.

She heard him gasp in her ear.

Rhiannon opened her eyes, and when a flash of electricity lassoed across the sky as a silvery snake might do, it reflected on her pupils and she had to look away. So bright...

The tiny hairs on her arms stood up.

Oh god...

“Whistler!” She held his jaw and lifted it upwards, just as the first flying creature unfolded its enormous wingspan above the crowd, and a literal ball of breathed fire heralded its entrance.

Behind her, the Las Vegas skyline shifted and shimmered, and for a moment, all that stood in place of the Sahara resort was a burned out shell of a building, its top floors caved inward as if sometime in years passed, a giant had taken a heavy step down.

Electricity.

He'd held Rhiannon in his arms, one finger tracing the outline of her upturned palm.

Whistler prayed it could always be this way with her.

Eyes lazily glanced at the night sky, and he smiled at the fireworks danced if only for them.

Only... that wasn't fireworks. Not man-made at any rate. His gasp roused the slayer and she took his head to see the impossible.

"What the--" he managed to expel before words lost him. The Sahara, one moment a shining beacon, was a firebomed husk.

Something out of The Flintstones circled the sky overhead. The ground shook.

"What do we do?"

Behind the prop wall that separated them from the crowd, people screamed.

Rhiannon could feel one of her own welling up in her chest. It was there in the way she looked at Whistler, like waking up and realizing a nightmare had chased her into ordinary life. She scrambled off his torso and started clawing at the laces of her boot. She loosened it up enough to get out a knife and force his fingers around the hilt.

Begging.

Hide.

The public bench was the pits. Hannah’s rear end started to get sore, but she wouldn’t get up until the last delicious morsel of her funnel cake was devoured. She licked the confectioner’s sugar off her fingertips. A little bit of leftover clung to the corner of her mouth.

She loved everything about fireworks... The anticipation when the little rockets shot high in the air with their whistling noise, the pop when they found their apex and exploded, and most of all the rain of light that arced over them like a beautiful umbrella of color. She was a little bummed there was no one to share it with, but hey. A single gal had to make do with what life threw her way, and right now it had decided to throw...

Ashes.

Wait... ashes?

Hannah lifted her forearm and wrinkled her nose at the strange dusting. Did fireworks shed? And after that, a fat grayish raindrop made a wobbly puddle in the center of it. It smelled a bit like spent matches.

She set her plate and cup down and wiped the mess on her jeans. Without thinking, Hannah tilted her face back to see what had gotten into the sky...

There was far-away roar like a dinosaur’s might sound, until a scaled creature swooped down right before her eyes, and ripped the Funnel Cake vendor right out of his stall.

Splatters of blood pitter-pattered like rain.

She screamed.

One man.

Hatted.

Armed with a knife.

Yeah, he should've booked to Rhiannon's car, grabbed as many passengers as the shocks would allow, and drive like hell.

But the scream caught his attention. He ran out from behind the stage, and into chaos. Whistler knew it was bad, but jesus fuck, it was an Oliver Stone film out there.

One man. Hatted. With a knife.

He pushed the brim down and rushed through the past of least resistance to the sound of the woman in distress.

Hannah had literally covered her eyes. Like that would make it go away. But that’s the kind of thing a girl did when the guy peddling confectioner’s sugar splashed blood on her jingle bell shoes. It wasn’t his fault. He was being eaten at the time.

So on and on she screamed.

Until she realized she was a sitting duck like that and got down on her knees. Hannah started to crawl through the running people, and more than once, somebody stepped on her fingers, but at least this way she was lower down and less likely to get caught up by a flying monkey, or whatever the heck was going on up there.

“Oh please, oh please, I don’t wanna die, I don’t wanna be eaten!” On her head, a stocking cap with antlers looked ridiculous in juxtaposition with all the crazy death around.

There hadn’t been a spanking. Such things were deemed ‘inappropriate for children’, even in a city that claimed it was all about the fun. All about the sin. Star was disappointed to find herself ushered offstage with a less-than-appropriate pinch to her left ass cheek. Apparently Las Vegas had one or two perverted ‘little people’ who found themselves gainfully employed as elves in the Christmas season.

She exited stage left.

She had a Polaroid in her jacket pocket and images of sugar plums dancing in her head. There had to be something else out that night that could distract the blonde from her most recent plight: reappearing in society after a month-long hiatus, fully recovered from an injury nobody knew a thing about, and missing a boyfriend yet again.

But something made Star turn back to the stage for another look. It was a growl.

While she looked on, a ragged-clothed creature lurched onto the stage behind Santa’s throne. It had a head as bald as a baby’s but bumpier, teeth that looked like razor-edged bone, and circles under its eyes that made Star’s brain scream for a tube of liquid concealer. Before there was a chance to figure out where this guy fit into all the winter season tidings, it had snapped the elastic band of Santa’s beard and gone in for a kill.

A vampire. The ugliest kind the earth had ever seen since Sunnydale 2003, not that she would know it.

All Star could do was stand there, her lipsticked mouth falling open, a string of words dropping like bombs to the underaged ears around them.

“Holy motherfucking shit...”

"Oh god," Leah tried very hard not to hyperventilate with limited success as things started coming out of nowhere to start chowing down on people.

She stood there frozen in place until something told her that she ought to start running. Leah was in good shape, but she didn't have the first damn clue how to fight and wasn't going to wind up somethings midnight snack.

The hybrid turned to run in blind panic, but didn't take more than five steps before running into someone else.

The Tarzan yell was over the top, but the redhead didn't have a witty saying on her tongue.

Vampires killing Santa Claus? Was nothing sacred?

Deanna charged against the flow of desperate attendees, digging her ice skates hard into the surface. She half-skated, half-jumped the distance, launched herself into the air, grabbed a pole and swung one hundred and forty degrees before letting go and sailing head long into the nasty bugger on stage. With a quick grapple of hands, she took hold of ugly's head and snapped it with force.

Spotting scattered candy canes, she quickly scooped two and drove them into the vampire's eyes.

"Not here," she growled. "No way you're fucking coming here."

Deanna scanned the crowd for a certain brunette slayer. Given their history, it only stood up that Rhiannon would be in the thick of it. She always stuck her nose into an apocalypse it seemed.

This time, the redhead would too.

Grace had found herself a seat near the ice skaters, amusing herself by watching the majority of them fall over themselves and each other while she finished off her second drink. Maybe she'd mark one of them for later, drag them into the shadows for a quick feed. There were enough people here that picking off one at random wouldn't cause a stir until clean up time. She'd cull a fat, slow one from the proverbial herd, leave the corpse someplace decorative for later.

The vampire was eyeing a particularly chubby specimen when she heard the sound of wings overhead. She looked up, saw only the flash and sparkle of fireworks, turned back to what she'd been doing. A rent-a-cop next to her shifted his weight, scratched his stomach where it strained the buttons of his uniform shirt.

Flap...flap...flap...

Later Grace would never be able to say what happened, only that she felt the hairs on the back of her neck prickle and her muscles tense up. The last time she'd heard wings flapping audibly, she'd gotten bitten by someone who wasn't who she thought they were, and the encounter with not-Sonya had yet to fade from her consciousness. She took a split-second to glance at the skaters again, then dove headlong to the ground, knocking down three or four people in front of her, self-preservation kicking in out of long habit.

WHOOSH!

Grace checked herself, sitting halfway up. Still in one piece.

The rent-a-cop hadn't been so lucky. The vampire watched with morbid fascination as a spear-like talon pierced the human through the chest and scooped him up into the air. Blood drops sprayed like a gentle rain as the winged thing (dragon? something else?) carried the still-kicking man away.

"Fucking Christ," Grace muttered, patting her own silent chest in relief. Nearby, someone screamed, and she hit the deck again.

If there was one thing she hated, it was super-natural party crashers.

Speaking of crashes...

A spray of wood splinters and larger slivers hit the ground all around Grace. The bench she’d been sitting on was split in half. On either side, its metal brackets tipped over and landed with two metal clanks. Through the middle, a pair of demons sailed over her body in a blur of limbs and wool trench coat.

Oblivious to her, Darian hit the ground on his back and kicked his foot against the ubervamp’s ribcage when it came down on him. The ancient vampire flailed through the air in a mass of waving arms, growling like something straight out of the mouth of hell. Over the railing it went... and landed in a slide on the ice rink full of skaters.

Oops.

"FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK!!!"

Grace could feel the wood showering down all around her, and she turtled harder, covering her head with her arms and hoping to any deity that would listen to a vampire that nothing struck her in the back hard enough to find her heart. When the debris had stopped falling, she started to crawl towards the relative safety of a police car that was parked near the curb. Her own weapons were stowed away in the trunk of the Plymouth, but there was no chance of getting there without going what seemed like a great distance.

"Darian?" she called, the single word a bellow as the shrieking all around her got louder. "Darian!" She looked up just in time to see the mother of all vampires sink its fangs into the throat of a teenage girl, and she scuttled faster. Finally reaching the Dealmaker, she let out another holler as a demon with two heads landed on the roof of a minivan, and all of the windows exploded at the impact.

"What in the fucking fuck..."

Something was very wrong with the world.

It wasn’t just an invasion. Yes, there were a dozen tears in the sky, from Searchlight all the way to Vegas, and they let through all manner of demons and old ones and even ordinary people -- doppelgangers of the ones in this world -- who had been hiding in the other one for years and now saw a way out, or simply got sucked through the dimensional holes and dumped into a different place. But there was another thing wrong.

It was how the world looked.

One minute it was all familiar, the Las Vegas strip on a wintry night, just being terrorized by otherworldly creatures who had come to stake greedy claim through ‘doorways’ made possible by a scientist named Andre. But then something would happen. Static. Flickering lights and electricity. In certain places, the sights and sounds got temporarily replaced by decimated versions of them.

It wasn’t an illusion. It was real. And there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to where it was happening or why.

Rhiannon was on the sidewalk. Swarms of people screamed in the festival lot behind her, but she was looking at the road. Cars and trucks honked and swerved lanes and slammed on brakes as demons landed right in front of them. They dodged cracks that appeared in the pavement, and were gone seconds later, like they were never there.

That was the problem.

A car fishtailed to escape a giant hole that gaped open in the middle of the Boulevard. It simply showed up. The Buick pitched bumper first into the fissure, and its rear tires spun near the rim. It stayed like that about twenty seconds, long enough for the man and woman inside to yell their heads off and wiggle their way out of the car. Both of them started clawing up from the trench.

Rhiannon took off in a sprint to get there, and had to shove through a bunch of people running like ants all over the road. Pure chaos.

She got on her knees and grabbed the woman’s fingers first. Her date was underneath, giving her a boost up to the slayer’s waiting hands. “Come on!” She pulled the woman up and over the edge, and was just about to reach her hands back into it

But then the fissure disappeared. It filled back in with rock and earth and pavement, just like it had never been empty in the first place. All that was left was the back end of a car getting bitten in half by the healing earth. It crashed onto the pavement. The same thing happened to the man. At least, all of him that wasn’t poking out of the hole.

“Oh fuck!” Rhiannon covered her mouth and got away from the severed pair of empty, reaching hands. She could hear screaming next to her ear. She couldn’t blame the woman. Rhiannon wanted to scream, too.

A horn got her on her feet and running. She got the lady out of the road and went running to the next catastrophe...

There was a fucking spider coming down the street. God, what she wouldn't give for back-up.

Funnel cakes were messier than Connor remembered, and he wiped at his shirt ineffectually with a napkin after tossing the empty plate into a nearby trash can. But the cherry topping was stubborn, and the attempt at clean-up only made it worse. The young man rolled his eyes. Fine. He'd worry about it later. There were worse things that could be staining his clothes.

He was on his way past the carolers again when the sky above his head split open, and he looked up in confusion, assuming it to be a part of the fireworks display. Cinders dropped from the sky, peppering his shirt and face. He saw a shape, a writhing, hideous shape, beyond the place where the sky had torn asunder, and his eyes widened as his mouth dropped open.

A hell dimension? Above Vegas?

He was given no time to ponder the questions, as screaming had erupted in every conceivable direction. Connor stared, dumbfounded, feeling his heart begin to thud painfully beneath his ribs. Destruction. Chaos. Panic.

Somebody knocked him down from behind, and the Destroyer struggled to his feet to dart out of the road. He needed to find Faith, find the Slayer somewhere among the crowd. He wasn't armed, but he knew how to improvise. Every instinct he had was telling him to fight, but he had to be better prepared first.

Connor slammed headlong into another figure, righted himself before he ended up flat on his face again. His posture was clearly tense and ready for battle, his hands itching for a weapon of some sort, any sort. Then he saw the spider-thing too.

I am my fathers' son, he reminded himself. Both of them.

"Are you all right?" he asked the woman he'd run into, raising his voice to be heard above the cacophony. "You wouldn't happen to have a giant can of Raid, would you?"

Rhiannon had been running when he collided with her. The impact spun the slayer and made her bite her tongue hard. The taste of iron flooded her mouth. She spat on the ground and wiped her lips against her sleeve. “Me?” Even in apocalyptic times, she had the sack to give a guy a dirty look. ‘Til she realized he wasn’t looking at her. He was looking at the spider, and there wasn’t any sign of retreat on his face. Potential civilian or not, any person of the non-screaming variety was a good sign right now.

“No... but I do have this.” She pulled a knife out of a cargo pocket and dropped the casing on the ground. It was ugly enough that she obviously wasn‘t an ordinary girl carrying that thing. Possibly a hitwoman. “And I’m about to ride that thing like a pony. Want to come?”

Out of everything Faith ever had to face in her life, ice skating was turning out to be the hardest. Once again, she was on her ass on the ice, a grumpy expression on her face as everyone else ooohed and ahhhed over the firework display above her head.

"Fucking ice," she growled to no one in particular, kicking the ice with one skated foot.

It left a dent on the otherwise smooth surface.

When Faith looked up again, there was a brand new set of fireworks in the sky, only this one seemed to involve lightning and dragons. Eyes widening, the brunette had to perform a double take before she could actually believe she just saw something straight out of Eragon flash across the sky.

And then there was chaos.

In a matter of seconds, all of Vegas had gone crazy. It was like everyone had seen the dragon at the exact same time, realized it wasn't a part of the festivities, and started to run like Hell. It didn't help that more demons had appeared out of the woodwork, looking about 10 times worse than the ones she had described fighting to Corbett. She remembered telling the Watcher that she was glad the demons hadn't brought their friends, or else she'd probably be a dead slayer right about now.

Well, the friends had come with a vengeance. Vampires that reminded her of the Turok Han fed on the crowd while the dragon continued to swoop overhead, breathing fire and scooping up people like they were field mice. Fires began to burn, people were dying, more demons were arriving... and Faith was sitting on her ass in the ice.

It was time to get in on the action. Arranging herself on her hands and knees, Faith crawled over to the edge of the rink and flung her body into the safety of the dry, brown grass that poked up through the fake snow. Silently, she cursed the fact that the only weapons she had brought with her had been the traditional wooden stake. Why hadn't she brought her sword? Or even a dagger? A wooden stake wasn't gonna do shit against this kind of evil.

Then she looked to her feet, ran a finger across the bottom of those evil ice skates, and grinned. "Wicked," the slayer exclaimed quietly, her face lighting up as she pulled the skates from her feet. She replaced the skates with her boots and rose from the ground, an ice skate in each hand. Swinging them by the shoe laces, they made a good weapon as the blades sliced through the air.

Destiny stood, transfixed, staring at the sheer amount of carnage that had started to appear in the five seconds between Dyan offering her a hot chocolate and landing in it. If it wasn't for the fact the vampiress' assaulter was running from very, very angry hellbeasts, Destiny would have found it hilarious.

However, the flap of an enormous pair of wings distracted her from watching what happened to Dyan. She followed the sound with her head and saw herself practically face to... snout? to a dragon.

"Holy shit! A fucking dragon! Where the hell is Hagrid when you need him?" She automatically reached for her ever-present stake, before stopping to realize how pointless the very large toothpick she was carrying would be.

The glint of metal caught her eye and Destiny whipped her head around to look for where it was coming from. A brunette Slayer was swinging... a pair of ice skates? No matter. Ice skates were sharp and that Slayer had an eye on the dragon, so a worthy ally she will be.

Running over as quickly as she could, Destiny waved at the other Slayer as she broke off the eight foot high post of one of the already broken booths. Bigger toothpick. "Destiny Brown, Slayer. Looking for female Slayer to fight big mean dragon. Also likes long walks on the beach and staking vampires. Need some help?"

Glancing over at her new companion, Faith grinned, pleased to meet yet another slayer out here. They were going to need all the slayers in Nevada if they were gonna get out of this Apocalypse alive. She just hoped there were more of them than just her, Rhiannon, and now Destiny. It also helped that she knew Connor was around somewhere, probably beating the shit out of something right now. As much trouble as they had in the past, it was comforting to know that the boy who hated demons more than anyone she knew was out there wailing on something.

"Could use a hand," Faith replied, her attention turning back to the dragon as it picked up yet another innocent bystander with its talons. "Name's Faith, by the way, and I'm about to become the world's first dragon slayer."

Her grin widened as she weighed that idea in her head for a moment. So far, she's been Faith the crazy slayer, Faith the rogue slayer, Faith the reformed slayer. Dragon slayer would be a nice title to add to her list of not so impressive descriptions.

The dragon swooped down again, this time breathing fire at a group huddling under the hot chocolate stand, the bystander still in its grip. Now low enough to get a good hit, Faith stopped twirling the skates and took aim. One of the skates sailed through the air, spiraling like a football until it met the dragon's flesh and embedded itself between the scales on the dragon's throat.

"Bullseye!" Faith yelled in victory, and then quickly ducked when one pissed off dragon puffed another ball of fire in her direction. Rolling out of the way, she could feel heat of the fireball that had just missed her and the could hear the angry howling of the dragon.

When she looked up, she saw the dragon's flying had become erratic as black blood spurted from its neck. It wasn't dead, but it was injured enough that it wasn't eating up anymore people on the ground. Instead, its focus was entirely on the wielder of the ice skate that remained stuck in its throat. The dragon was coming straight at her, leaving her no time to even try to run. All she could do was fight.

With a deranged look in her eyes, Faith turned to Destiny and exclaimed, "Watch and learn!"

A second later, Faith flipped up into the air, clearing the dragon's head as it lowered to take a bite out of its opponent, and landed on its scaly back, legs straddling it around its neck. The dragon bucked in response, squirming and screeching as it flew wildly through the air, trying to throw the slayer off its back. Faith couldn't help but scream out a "YEEHAW!" as she tightened her legs around its neck and began to mash her remaining skate against the dragon's head and neck.
