Winter Solstice Thread, Part 1
December 21st, 2010 was the longest night of the year and the official start of the winter season in the desert. Darkness arrived as early as it ever would, just as the corner of Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard was coming alive. City planners had coordinated with local vendors to bring locals and tourists alike a Winter Solstice Celebration to remember. It was held outside, on an empty, paved lot across from the Sahara resort. This evening, however, all that open space was filled with the entertainment and the crowd.

There were small stages set up at two corners, for a variety of live performances to include dancers and singers, local bands and comedians. In another corner of the lot, a small winter wonderland had been set up with fake snow and a rink brought in for ice skating, and the air was just cool enough to allow the ice a slower melt. The farthest corner of the lot featured a dug-out pit with the makings of a small bonfire. In the center of it all, there were vendors selling hot chocolate, coffee, eggnog, spirits, confectionaries and pizza and pretzels. Some had brought Vegas's typical fare... slot machines. Here and there, a few vendors played carols from small speakers. Periodically, bursts of fireworks dressed up the sky between neon-lit buildings. Everything was decked out in ice cycles and silver and blue.

All sorts of people were in attendance, some of them not truly people at all. In the darkest corners, mischief lurked, and some of it spilled into the streets around the celebration.

"Fa la la la la, la la la laaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh"

Deanna was in what could be described as an 'up tempo' mood. Since returning from her sojurn to 'hell on earth' she'd taken to getting a bit crazy. Or crazier. Not in the 'grrr I'm a vampire and I bring death and I'll begin by eating you and your kittens' kind of insanity, but more a 'this is a wonderful world after all and I'm gonna enjoy every facet of it while I eat you and your kittens'.

She'd spied the notice for the Soltice celebrations in the Wynn's hotel lobby and couldn't resist. The redhead hadn't skated since her time in London and even though it wasn't an 'authentic' yuletide event given the warmer climes, she'd dug her ice skates out of storage and carted them down toward Sahara Avenue.

As the red-headed vampire slipped by on her thin, silver blades, a pair of eyebrows peaked in amusement. It wasn’t the spectacle he’d been expecting to witness, but then again, there were eyebrows that would raise at the simple thought of him turning up at a solstice celebration.

However, just like Fourth of July had been in Searchlight, few events of this caliber could happen in the area without some sort of supernatural drama unfolding. The scent of anticipation on the air was enough to coax him outside. A loss of electricity had been to blame last time. Tonight, Darian hedged his bets on a freak accident at the bonfire.

“You didn’t like the gift, Deanna?”

The redhead pivoted upon hearing her name and a huge smile erupted, one that could have lit up the Las Vegas strip. She bounded over and gave Rico Suave Darian a crushing hug.

"You beast!" she finally exclaimed, a slap on his shoulder. "I love the gift, but haven't used yet. I've promised a very good friend a day to remember and well, you know how it is for people like us. There's always something getting in the way of our personal free time."

She looped one arm around his. From their previous encounter she remembered Darian was a bit... protective of his personal space but dammit, Deanna just didn't care. She decided if there was one challenge she would take on this evening, it would be to make the man crack a smile.

"Okay, tall dark and sauve, you're buying me a hot chocolate and telling me how you solved your problem back when we last talked. You spill, and I'll fill you in about my encounter with cannibal chearleaders on crack."

Dan had returned to Las Vegas from Tokyo, Japan on business the day before. He was still jet lag, but had learned the best remedy was a good night of celebrating. He planned a non-eventful casual night out, he had work in the morning after all. The winter solstice celebration seem to be a safe bet, at least a start. He was curious how south westerners viewed winter in the desert with fake snow and ice. It was a change and an odd feeling to attend one of these winter events in a light jacket and jeans. No fear of frost bite today.

He parked his car at the public parking garage and walked to the made up winter wonderland. He would have a drink and see how things go.

Hannah’s stocking cap had antlers.

And a red ball nose on the front.

It wasn’t cold enough to warrant headwear, but it was so freaking cool she couldn’t leave it hanging on that hook in the closet for another year. It was sad. So as she scurried around the stanchions that marked off the lot, the little fuzzy nose jiggled merrily.

Also, there were tiny bells on her shoelaces.

“Hey... Scuse me!” She ran up to the stranger and tapped his elbow. “Do you know where the funnel cakes are? I’m staaaarving!”

Dan was minding his own business looking for a beer which apparently there were none here, when someone touched his arm. “Hey,” he smiled at the pretty woman wearing a holiday stocking cap. “I like the hat.” He then looked around quickly, “Funnel Cake, hmmm, sure lets have some funnel cake.” He just took her question as an invitation.

“There’s a vendor behind you,” he pointed that way. “He’s a friend of mind.” It was a guess that the vendor was male, he could not exactly tell who was at the booth with the large crowd in front of it forming a line. It could be a bunch of kids running it, or even org-looking criminal just released from prison the day before. Dan did not want her to go away without an introduction.

Leah was dressed for the weather in jeans and a thick red turtleneck under her leather jacket, and looked disdainfully at the people bundled up in bulky winter coats and hats. The lightweights wouldn't survive a day of a Buffalo snowstorm.

Since her hellish stay in that other dimension she'd been covering up more than normal, and she still hadn't full recovered mentally from the experience. The images were seared into her mind, especially of the thing that had owned her other self.

Nightmares still woke her up two nights out of three.

The girl forced the dark thoughts from her mind and smiled, she was back home and safe. It was time to enjoy the festival.

With that in mind, she moved to stand in line to buy a mug of hot cider.

It was one thing that you could purchase sno-globes at any tourist shop in Las Vegas - a city smack dab in the middle of the Nevada desert - but it was entirely a whole other thing to be in the middle of said desert city surrounded by copius amounts of fake snow and icicles. It was enough to trick your mind into thinking you were actually cold.

Elian trundled along through the crowds, pretentiously wearing a scarf over his teeshirt, hands stuck in the pockets of his navy blue Dickies. He'd kept his eyes peeled for anyone he knew, except he realized he didn't really know anyone, save for maybe Chloe, and half wondered if she was around somewhere.

He figured he'd give the skating a shot, and headed over towards the makeshift rink. He spied a lineup and got in it behind an attractive brunette.

"Hey, is this the lineup for skate rentals?"

Leah had been focused on mentally urging the line to move faster and so was surprised when the male voice sounded behind her.

Her eyes automatically swept up and down as she took in his appearance and her lips curled upward into a smile, not just in amusement at his choice of clothing, he was a very good looking guy. Judging from the lack of long sleeves he might not be a rocket scientist, but good looks could make up for a lot and Leah hadn't been out in a while.

"Nope," she answered his question cheerfully "It's the line for apple cider, see?" the girl pointed up the line toward the booth at its head, where two teenagers were handing out cups of cider while an older woman manned the register.

"The line for skates is over there I think," the girl said absently, and stuck out a hand "I'm Leah."

Corbett was frustrated. All these vendors strwen about the place and not one of them was selling beer. All the eggnog one person could stomach (and then some), but no beer. If Corbett had known that, he would've snuck his own into the pocket of his leather coat before coming to this little shindig.

A shindig he was sort of wondering why he bothered attending. Seemed like nothing more than an excuse to eat, drink, listen to music and light fireworks. And it wasn't even on Christmas Day, a day the Watcher assumed most people in this country associated with a festival.

Then again, considering the general weirdness that was southern Nevada, Corbett really wasn't surprised the festivities occurred on what was once a pagan festival.

Not that Corbett was much of a Christmas/Winter Solstice expert. He'd never really celebrated as a child, confined to the rigorous world of Watcher studies and the sort. If he'd ever spent the holiday with family, it had been when he was a toddler, before his mother really began her duties with the Council and before Corbett himself began study.

Teresa had made a Christmas tradition of sorts for her Watcher, with gifts and a feast on the big day, buty aside from that, Corbett had never really gotten the holiday spirit.

Not exactly a "Bah humbug," but more of a "Eh, okay. Whatever."

Through the Las Vegas streets, Faith's motorcycle roared, turning sharply down corners and speeding through the traffic, a gleeful look on the slayer's face as she weaved through the cars that were stuck sitting in place. Cars honked loudly as she whizzed by, obviously annoyed by how close her bike was coming to making contact. The slayer just grinned and flipped them off, dark hair blowing behind her as cool wind blew into her face, reddening her cheeks.

As she turned onto Las Vegas boulevard, she finally saw what all the commotion was about. An area just down the street had been transformed into a winter wonderland overnight and hordes of people were filing in to enjoy the festivities. Although she wasn't one to enjoy the holidays much, considering that all her Christmases since birth had pretty much been crap, she knew that all these people crowded together in a place like this were just begging for a vampire to sneak up on them as they made their way to the bathroom or their car, and the slayer couldn't just drive off and let these idiots become vampire bait. Plus, after all the strange demons she'd seen around town lately, it was probably better than someone other than a couple of clueless cops hung around.

So Faith parked her bike and joined the hordes of people milling around, the sounds of annoying Christmas music blasting in her ears. At least the song currently playing was a general one as opposed to the even more horrifying religious tunes that got played around this time of year. She'd take Walkin' In a Winter Wonderland over Silent Night any day, even if it was way overly cheerful.

As she wandered over to the area selling food and drink, she noticed the familiar back of a leather jacket just a few feet away from the eggnog stand, walking idly away from the group of people crowded around it. It had been a while since she'd seen her watcher, and it was about time they had another little chat. She knew they were taking this casually, but she had to report in sometime.

Catching up to him, she easily matched his stride, not waiting for him to notice her as she said, "Hey, Watcher man. What brings you out here to the holly and jolly?"

Corbett smiled a bit when he laid eyes on Faith, glad to finally see afamiliar face among the sea of strangers and strange tihngs. He stuffed his hands back in the pockets of his coat, having just lit a cigarette, puffing mindlessly on it as his eyes surveyed the goings-on.

"Boredom," he admitted alomost bitterly. "I'm afraid Christmas isn't exactly a cause for...celebration and good tidings for me."

He blew smoke into the air intermittently, getting tired of all the cheerful jingles fluttering about the place. He hadn't exactly come out looking for this party specifically; he'd planned on going to the Green Room, getting a drink and perhaps catching up with Lorne, but once he saw the food and the drink, he decided to try making merry.

Only not so much.

"And you?" he quipped, cocking his head to the side. He hadn't seen Faith in a while; he was curious to know what she'd been up to.

The smell of ice mingled with slightly spicy chocolate was easily breathed in as Reverie walked down the street. It brought back a flood of memories and she momentarily gave herself some time to remember doing these things back in Scotland. That was all it took, her mind was made up and she was going to be enjoying the night here.

The blonde’s grin was genuine and warm as she dodged people all laughing and enjoying the festivities. She herself had spotted the ice rink and had started making her way over to it. There was always something so incredibly appealing about ice. The semi transparent solidness was mesmerizing in its own right. It’s ability to change to water or be carved into something else always fascinated her.

It wasn’t long before she spotted a familiar face. Deanna. The young investigator smiled and looked down at herself, clad in black pants and a white blouse hidden partially by her short leather jacket, she was certainly the picture opposite of how she looked that night she had met Victoria’s Sire. That opening night of Fang Noir she had been dressed as a Blood Goddess.

Looking back up, she allowed her ice blue eyes to focus on the woman and in the split second the vampire looked her way she mouthed a simple, “Hi.” Her left hand being brought up in a small wave. Leaving the option open for the woman to come over but not assuming she would. After all, she was talking to someone already, and that would be rude just to walk over and barge in.

Instead she turned and faced a stall selling mulled wine. The spices tingling her nostrils and causing the faintest build up of saliva. Stepping forward the young woman handed over a few crisp dollars out of her now open wallet. In return she was given a cup of steaming spiced wine. “Thank you, happy holidays.” It was said with a cheeky grin and a sparkle in her eye, the soft accent just being carried over the noise of laughter and talking.

The cup was brought to her lips and she took a small sip to taste. “Mmm…” Oh, this was good, not cheap rubbish either. Reverie took another sip as her eyes scanned the crowd. The smile on her face was almost as warm as the beverage she was drinking, the spice included.

"I think I'm envious..."

The words came from slightly behind the stall, and Grace slouched into view to indicate the cup Reverie was holding. She'd been wandering through the crowds once people really started to gather at the event, and spotted the investigator by chance while on her way to watch some of the skaters. She paused long enough to light a cigarette, shrugged one shoulder.

"Don't think I realized you had such a pretty smile," she continued. "'Course, the way we keep runnin' into each other, most of the circumstances ain't been smile-worthy." Another shrug.

"Where's your minder?" the vampire asked without any real rancor. "I ain't in no mood to argue for a change, so if'n she's around I can just tip my hat and wander off."

Reverie turned to grin mischievously at Grace, one slender eyebrow lifting up questioningly. “Envious of the drink, may I ask why that is?” Again, the sweetly spiced liquid was brought to her lips and sipped, leaving a watery transparent coating on them that she would lick off later.

“I don’t have a minder, but Dyan isn’t here.” Not yet anyway, though she wondered if the woman would show up. She said it evenly, smiling all the while, not upset but tacking it as a teasing jab. “Thank you for the compliment.” Now that she did mean, if the slight blush was anything to go by.

Damn if Morgan hadn't picked on his mood the moment Whistler walked into the Witching Hour. The incessant humming, the far-away looks, the almost severed thumb when he prepped the vegetables...

She rightly kicked him out of the restaurant and told him to take a personal day. But just the one. They were in the throes of the holiday and if he took another stab at injuring himself, Whistler would be looking for other work.

A cigarette was lit as Whistler ambled through the crowds. Everything was more colorful, and it wasn't just the neon lights that surrounded the throng.

Fuck me, I'm actually happy, he thought. Wonder how long that'll last?

As if in answer to Whistler's question, a guy dressed up like a snowman stepped out in front of him from a booth selling refreshments. The collision had caused him to drop the styrofoam cup that had been in his hand at the time. When it hit the ground between their feet, the lid popped up and lukewarm coffee splashed from inside.

Why was a guy in costume drinking a warm beverage, you ask? Probably a demon.

Oz had been sitting at a slot machine for the past few minutes, continuously pumping quarters despite the fact that it wasn't paying back, all the while telling himself that he was only going to play for five more minutes. Hearing the Frosty cry out in anger even over the noise of all the other people, the werewolf turned on his stool to face the pair. What a sight that was.

Maybe in a perfect world the two could have apologized for not paying close enough attention, but in all his life the redhead hadn't know anything to be perfect. Instead of shrugging it off, Frosty pushed the demon, obviously peeved that his suit was now stained. Oz stood up before the situation could get any worse, stepping between them to prevent either from taking an actual swing at each other. A napkin was offered up to both, and the costumed snowman took the hint and shoved off.

"Shouldn't he be more...jolly?" His gaze followed Frosty as the snowman walked off, giving a small shake of his head before turning towards Whistler.

Destiny wrapped her light sweater around herself. Yule was Adam's favorite holiday, being the day he first dedicated himself to the Craft. Not that she was out here in what could be described as a desert winter wonderland all by her lonesome. Two of her classmates in her Film Editing class had invited her to join them after her final had been handed in. The Film students at UNLV were really friendly, and a lot of them were surprised when she told them how much older she was than them. Still, the fact of the matter was is that they mentioned she should go.

Except for the fact that about five minutes after she got there, both of them texted her, saying that studying for their Philosophy final was taking much longer than they expected.

No matter. Destiny was determined to have fun and accomplish her final 2010 goal to be more open to meeting people. Besides, if they were sketchy, she had more than her fair share of self-defense techniques. And a stake strapped to her calf for safekeeping. Some habits die hard.

Dyan gave a sly little smile, she'd seen Grace chatting Reverie up and intended to take care of it. Later. Right now, she was tailing a dark haired little Slayer she'd had a bit of a run in with quite some time ago.

The holidays were a perfect time to renew acquaintences, one would think. So that's exactly what she intended to do this evening, renew a few old acquaintences and perhaps have some fun.

She tapped the Slayer on the shoulder, then backed out of arm's reach, just in case a stake was easily at hand. Going up in a puff of dust just before the year ended was not her idea of a good time.

"Greetings and salutations, Destiny." She thought that was the young woman's name, but it had been quite a long time. Back when she'd been toying with old William's head. He seemed to have disappeared though. Spilt milk, perhaps.
